Live Coverage of Apple Senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller's Macworld Expo 2009 Keynote
I think I read that Apple used to do 6 shows a year world wide and they have cut that down over the years to the Frisco Show...
Whatever sells computers right?
They have been around for 30 years and are a fad?
What does Al Gore being on their board have to do with the quality of their products? For me, they make the best, most intuitive products, that is why I buy them not who is on their board. Honestly as long as everything is done legally by their board I don’t care who is on the board.
Thanks Swordmaker. Good news that, about the 17in MacBook Pro. Is this the machined aluminum model then? Glad to see they stuck with FW. I’m sure someone will find some irrational way to piss and moan about the iTunes library transitioning to DRM-free.

Uh, 25th? :’)
> You must be new around here...
A month and a half. Ya think??
> welcome...I guess..
Yeah, TrollHC, welcome to FR. Try to keep the snotty attitude down to a dull roar, though, until you learn more about how the tech forums operate, okay? If you don't like the topic under discussion, nobody's making you post here, and there are hundreds of other FR threads you can visit. Thanks.
Uh, right! The Mac OS just seems more mature for it's age.
Thanks for the welcome. I think I’ll post where I like since it is a discussion. I don’t see why you’re under the impression that all the discussion has to be positively slanted toward Apple, but I’ll respect your wishes on this thread and take my reminders that Al Gore sits on the board of Apple to other parts of the forum for now.
Discussion doesn't have to be positively slanted toward Apple, e.g. I've posted both pro and con Apple in the past; I'm no Apple fanboy. But this is a thread about the keynote address.
What I meant by:
...If you don't like the topic under discussion, nobody's making you post here...was "the topic here is the Macworld keynote address, not who is on their board of directors (believe me, we all already know that!), or whether their products are an artificial fad." Those comments are nothing but trolling and/or hijack attempts. That's why I suggested you:
...learn more about how the tech forums operate...since we try (admittedly with imperfect success) to stick to the posted topic.
You're welcome to throw whatever negative comments you want at the keynote or Macworld or Schiller, or argue with those who liked it -- knock yourself out; that's what this thread is about.
But trolling only serves to annoy the serious posters, and it reduces the credibility of your on-topic comments. So please don't clutter an otherwise interesting discussion with off-topic trash that floats in the thread like a turd in a punchbowl.
Thanks!
No need to thank me, I’ll be posting on every Apple discussion I find. No one is trolling, I boycott Apple because of their leftist image and under the radar support of leftist ideology; and I hate to see fanboys posting ads in the guise of press releases.
I recommend you re-examine your beliefs and boycott Apple.
Are you also boycotting Microsoft because of the dollars from the Gates Foundation going to promote abortion and infanticide and many other socialist agendas around the world? If you examine the corporate giving, you will find that MS has given far more to Liberal than Conservative candidates and causes.
How about boycotting Linux for its anti-Capitalist philosophy?
Go for it. Long as you stay reasonably on-topic and don't get overly abusive, you are most welcome.
> No one is trolling, I boycott Apple because of their leftist image and under the radar support of leftist ideology;
Find a computer company that doesn't do so, and get back to me. Apple, Microsoft, most Linux disros -- they all lean to the left.
What do you use at home, an abacus? ;-) Seriously -- what's the machine (or machines) you use most at home, hardware and OS?
If you want to know in return where I'm coming from, check out my FR profile page at the end (Computer-tech Full Disclosure Section).
> ... and I hate to see fanboys posting ads in the guise of press releases.
Do you likewise hate Windows fanboys? No, you don't seem to -- your FR posting history fails to find even a single instance of the strings "windows", "microsoft", or "gates". And there have certainly been plenty of threads in the past two months where you could come in and excoriate Bill Gates for his left-liberal bias, and the big contributions Microsoft makes to leftist causes.
Methinks you're not telling the whole truth about your motive... ;-)
> I recommend you re-examine your beliefs and boycott Apple.
Ehhh, nah. They make good hardware with Unix on it. As a computer designer and engineer I respect good hardware, and as a Unix-head I like having BSD under the hood. But I run all hardware and OSes, I don't play favorites really -- I use whatever suits the tasks at hand, which generally means a mix of stuff.
Boycotting Apple would be stupid for me, since in order to be consistent I'd also have to boycott Microsoft and Linux, and probably NetBSD, and then I'd be the one with the abacus.
Free Republic runs on Linux and has done so since its inception in 1996
-- you know, Linux -- that leftist open-source operating system whose kernel was written by Linus Torvalds (whose parents were Communists), and whose GNU tools and utilities are the child of Richard Stallman (who is about as leftist as they come)???
I don't want to be responsible for his heart failing, ya know... ;-)
I don't want to be the one to have to break it to him that he's posting on a forum that runs on (GASP!!) Linux...
See the last half-dozen or so comments... ;-)
More than we can say for some FReepers. ;’)
Being forced to do business with a leftie company is unfortunate, but unavoidable for me and many others who need to work in/on their hardware/network infrastructure. However, to actively go and PROMOTE their products is quite another.
I’ll content myself with the fact that Apple’s marketshare worldwide is still only 10%, even after they’ve been in business for 31 years; their 1/3 of 1% a year anemic marketshare growth always puts a smile on my face.
If he wants to politicize his choice of computing hardware, I guess we can't really stop it. Hopefully, he'll be reasonable enough to actually discuss it, rather than just throwing conversational grenades and leaving.
Fine. But I'm not promoting them, I merely find them the best fit for some of the tasks I do each day. Windows, Linux, and NetBSD are likewise daily tools for me. Why your concern? It's not like there's a pure-bred rightwing computer company out there, is there? (If there is, you could shill for them here with a clear conscience.)
> Ill content myself with the fact that Apples marketshare worldwide is still only 10%, even after theyve been in business for 31 years; their 1/3 of 1% a year anemic marketshare growth always puts a smile on my face.
Now really, THC, you -can't- be that ignorant of the history of small computers, can you?
The Apple II had a very large marketshare prior to 1983 (when the IBM-PC and MSDOS started to take off) -- it was the leader in most respects. The IBM-PC swamped it for business and some home use through the mid-80's, but the Macintosh caught on and owned the creative and educational markets they went for. What the IBM-PC really did was wipe out every -other- competing computer commpany, save Apple. Once the clones started (mainly with Compaq), what actually happened was a huge expansion of the pie. Apple didn't lose customers, but the pie expanded much faster than they could possibly respond.
Since 1984, Apple hasn't sought a large share of that huge market again -- they were content to own the creative and educational markets, and they sure did. Or don't you read history and know these things? I lived and worked in those times, and remember.
Windows couldn't and didn't challenge the Mac's chosen market segments until Win95 -- a decade after the Macintosh. Unfortunately for Apple, that was during a time when they were unwisely trying to compete with beige boxes, and they were stupid and nearly lost it all. Recovery was tough.
The important thing Apple did was change their operating system to one based on Unix, and in 2002 OS-X started taking off. It's now growing at a very high rate -- not your average-over-31-years rate of 1/3 of 1%, but more like 20-30% per year. While the rest of the PC/Windows market is stagnant.
So before you get too enamored of that smile on your face, reflect on the fact that your cheerfully low number is meaningless. First, because it neglects the fact that Apple has not competed for marketshare across the board until the past year, and second, because the current rate of growth is phenomenal, literally two orders of magnitude higher than what you claim with your average.
I'm really hoping you just forgot to add a "/sarc" tag at the end of your comment. Otherwise, I have to conclude that your overt hatred of Apple has clouded your thinking to an unfortunate degree.
Hatred is not healthy, THC. I suggest that you ease up a little.
Yeah, I sorta miss GE... not. ;-)
> If he wants to politicize his choice of computing hardware, I guess we can't really stop it. Hopefully, he'll be reasonable enough to actually discuss it, rather than just throwing conversational grenades and leaving.
So far it's the latter, and he doesn't respond to direct questions. But he's a n00b and may learn.
See my lengthy reply #39 above. So far I get the feeling he's just got no background and is walking around with a chip on his shoulder about Apple for some unknown reason.
He's welcome to do that, of course; but if he persists in saying silly things I'll try to answer them (i.e. feed the troll) unless I'm careful...
