Also, pencil sketches don't scan well - or at least they didn't on my scanner at the time. They required quite a bit of retouching in my graphics software to soften it.

So I'm not the only one with that problem. My problem is that I can't retouch on the computer very well. I sketched a profile of my wife in 1964 while she was watching TV. Recently I scanned it in but it is so badly smudged from being in an album for 40 plus years that I haven't been able to clean it up.

Origin of Penguin Days:

Penguin Awareness Day, and World Penguin Day are great opportunities to learn about and appreciate one of the few natives of Antarctica.

These days are also a time to wear black and white---penguin colors. However, wearing a tuxedo in their honor is optional. It is also popular today to tell a penguin joke or two.

World Penguin Day coincides with the annual northward migration of penguins. This happens each year on or around April 25th. Penguins do not fly. Rather, they walk, or waddle their way to and from.

Penguin Awareness Day: Always January 20
World Penguin Day: Always April 25th

Did you know? Penguins are found in Antarctica, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Elsewhere, they are only found in zoos.

Ahem. Your source may be wrong, LJ.
Here is a picture (an actual photograph)
Of an air-borne pigeon. (Wink, wink)

WJ, Thank you for the wonderful breakfast! Mmmm, good! (You don’t happen to have Chocolate Maypo for the next breakfast you host, do you? I can’t find it anywhere!)

They do take a lot of time and patience to retouch - at least mine did, because in the results of the scanned sketches, the pencil shading and lines weren’t consistent - some were dark and splotchy and not nearly as smoothly blended as the original. Here’s another odd thing: I am left-handed and cannot draw nor even write my name where you can read it with my right hand - yet, I have never been able to use my mouse with my LEFT hand, thus I do every bit of detail with my right hand. :)

Remember I told you not to trust experts?

We now have photographic evidence that penguins to indeed fly.

Well, I can tell you that you chose a beautiful one that I would like "thank you" graphic, Amy. I think we're making the best of today - the opening graphic is there, and the obligatory holiday post is there - it's up to anyone who wants to focus on Fun Amy's Place, or Melancholy Amy's Place today - or both. :)

They are reporting on HLN that Sen. Ted Kennedy collapsed at the inagural luncheon, and was taken by ambulance to hospital.

Billie, I always knew you were an artist on the computer, but WOW! You do miracles with your pencil. Beautiful picture, and thank you for sharing with us.

Thanks, ya'll, for filling in the blanks with answers to all the questions we've been asking about penguins:

  1. Can they really fly,
  2. Do they really wear a tux,
  3. Are their feet really happy.......?! :)

Thank you, girls!

One of the problems that I have with this sketch of my wife is that there is no photograph to use as a guide for shadows and shading. The only guide is the badly smudged original. So I not only have the problems generated by scanning but a bad original as well. I should have taken better care of it. Don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do anything with it now.

So, you draw with a mouse? I have one of the drawing pads that attaches thru a USB port but it doesn’t help that much. I use a mouse for cartoons but then they are crude with no shading.

Heard a little bit of that. The say he started seizing and didn’t stop when they put him in the wheelchair and wheeled him out.

YIKES! I think that post translated more sarcasm than cute, and it wasn't my intention at all. :(

Maybe my smiley was in the wrong place. LOL
