Microsoft Corp.'s Zune portable music player is suffering from a glitch that may have frozen thousands of units in the latest setback for the world's biggest software company.
On Wednesday, Zune owners flooded blogs and Internet chat sites to complain that they couldn't listen to music on the 30-gigabyte version of the Zune, an early version of the device, because it wouldn't start up properly.

The best minds ever collected on the internet and know-it-alls.
And 99% of them can barely do more than surf the internet with a computer.
A hard reset only temporarily fixes the problem. It also voids the warranty, so it could cause more problems if the player can’t be fixed with a software or firmware update.
Even better, the hard drive keeps spinning and the players are overheating. Yippee!!!
Well I for one am glad this is a Zune. I have one of the effected units btw.
I bet MS will either fix it or offer a new one.
They are under such public scrutiny that they almost HAVE to...
Other IT companies like Cisco, Apple and others fly below the lamestream media radar and are able to get by with much less consideration for the consumer.
The Zune unlike other units is not designed to be a disposal player and I am sure Microsoft will stand behind it.
I am not otherwise a big fan of MS. Vista is almost as bloated as Fedora Core 10 in my book!
Microsoft says that it has something to do with the clock timer bug and 2008 being a leap year. The latest statement hopes that tomorrow the problem will go away till next leap year.
I read about this problem here and checked my sons. Turned it on and it froze, he swears that I broke it!!!

I turned mine on and it froze just like everyone’s...appeared to reboot and that’s all. Can’t turn it off...nothing works.
Surely they will offer a fix? I called their support lines and a recording said they were unable to take my call because of “bad weather”...that was the dumbest thing I ever heard.....
Then I thought later, did they mean “the freeze”?
NOT FUNNY.
I was reading on another website that they may revive at 12:01 am GMT.
We’ll know in another hour.
The Zune was the only gift one of my grandkids wanted - and against my better judgement, we got it for her. I’ll save the link just in case. Thanks for posting it.
What is wrong with Microsoft? First, the Xbox dies, the drives that is, then there’s reason to believe they released the 360 even though they scratch cd’s, then they release vista, then the 360’s go out, now this.
What’s the only constant? Pretty sure it’s just the blowhard Steve Ballmer.
“Microsoft has really turned into a joke.”
Microsoft was always a joke.
Don’t ever forget - it was the MEDIA who gave Microsoft its monopoly. IBM’s OS/2 and Apple’s MACs where always better than any version of Windows.
But Gates courted the PC media - brought them to special shindigs in Redmond - wined and dined them - gave them juicy tidbits of press releases.. The media identified with Gates. So they always lied and badmouthed OS/2 and Apples.
It was analogous to the way the media identifies with Liberals now and they lie and badmouth conservatives.
Indeed.
And that's just me.
Do they even have a QA department there?
Yep, my walkman is still doing its thing. : )
I've had my current iAudio for maybe 3 yrs now. I think I spent $99 or something. I spent maybe $60 for my first one. So far, no problems. I don't see any reason to become a slave to Apple for $300+ for something you can drop, lose, sit on, etc.
Microsoft was always a joke.
Nah. I'm a big fan of M80, F80, and MBASIC (Microsoft's assembler, FORTRAN compiler, and BASIC interpreter for CP/M-80). Since then, not so much.
Heck I run OpenSuse x_64 11.1,Linux. How would I know?? (BG)

I had to reboot my iPhone yesterday after it froze up.
What do you do when you see a sign that says: "Wet Paint"?
Steve Jobs is, they say, a "perfectionist". . .
Steve Balmer is, obviously, a "It's-OK-ist". . .
