Yes, it does use more bandwidth but you can make up the difference by omitting the spaces between your words and don't use paragraph or line breaks. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Serious answer: the binary string sent is the same size for every ASCII character and the extra characters required for markup (bold, color, larger font etc) are insignificant for broadband connections.
No back to snarking.
