930 AM PST SUN DEC 14 2008

...COLD AND STORMY WEATHER PATTERN FOR SOUTHWEST CALIFORNIA...

A DEEP LOW PRESSURE TROUGH PERSISTING OVER THE WEST WILL BRING A
SERIES OF WEATHER SYSTEMS INTO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FROM THE NORTH
THIS WEEK. THIS WILL CAUSE COOL WEATHER WITH PERIODS OF RAIN AND
MOUNTAIN SNOW. THERE WILL ALSO BE LOCAL STRONG GUSTY WINDS AT
TIMES...MAINLY IN THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS.

THERE WILL BE A FEW LIGHT SHOWERS TODAY. MORE SIGNIFICANT
PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TONIGHT AND MONDAY AS A WEATHER
SYSTEM MOVES THROUGH THE MAIN UPPER LOW. ANOTHER WEATHER SYSTEM
COULD BRING MORE PRECIPITATION TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. THERE
WILL BE PERIODS OF SHOWERS IN BETWEEN THESE DISTURBANCES.

PRELIMINARY RAINFALL ESTIMATES THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK RANGE
FROM ABOUT ONE TO TWO INCHES WEST OF THE MOUNTAINS...TWO TO FOUR
INCHES ON THE WEST FACING MOUNTAIN SLOPES AND A HALF INCH TO ONE
INCH IN THE DESERTS. HOWEVER...IN ANY OF THESE AREAS...LOCALLY
HEAVIER RAINFALL COULD OCCUR.

SNOW LEVELS WILL BE AROUND 4000 TO 5000 FEET BY MONDAY AND WILL
CONTINUE THROUGH THURSDAY...THOUGH IT COULD GET LOCALLY
LOWER...ESPECIALLY TUESDAY NIGHT OR WEDNESDAY. THERE COULD BE ONE TO
TWO FEET OF SNOW AT THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE SAN BERNARDINO AND
RIVERSIDE COUNTY MOUNTAINS WITH UP TO ONE FOOT IN THE HIGHER PARTS
OF THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY MOUNTAINS. SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW COULD FALL
ON THE PEAKS OF THE SANTA ANA MOUNTAINS. SNOW...BLOWING SNOW AND
DENSE FOG WITH NEAR ZERO VISIBILITIES AT TIMES AND MAKE TRAVEL
HAZARDOUS THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS DURING THIS PERIOD.

PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN WILL INCREASE THE FLASH FLOOD POTENTIAL.
RESIDENTS LIVING IN AND BELOW RECENTLY BURNED AREAS OR NEAR STEEP
TERRAIN SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR POSSIBLE FLASH FLOODING AND DEBRIS
FLOW. THE SHOWERS WILL ALSO MAKE ROADS SLICK. OTHERWISE...THE
PRECIPITATION WILL BENEFIT IRRIGATION NEEDS. PEOPLE PLANNING OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES SHOULD MONITOR THE LATEST WEATHER FORECASTS.

STRONG GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE FROM THE WEST OR
SOUTHWEST LATE TONIGHT AND CONTINUE THROUGH MONDAY. THE STRONGEST
WINDS ARE EXPECTED IN THE MOUNTAINS AND ON THE NORTH AND EAST SLOPES
AS WELL AS IN THE DESERTS. IN THE MOUNTAINS...THE WINDS COULD REACH
25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 65 MPH. IN THE DESERTS...WINDS COULD
REACH 20 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH AT TIMES.

WINDS THIS STRONG WILL PRESENT A HAZARD TO MOTORISTS...ESPECIALLY
FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES AND IN THOSE AREAS WITH LITTLE OR NO
PRECIPITATION...BLOWING SAND OR DUST COULD REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO
NEAR ZERO AT TIMES.

Stay safe. I remember those torrential rains that would break a drought when we lived in Yucaipa. We lived in the Upper part and would watch the rain like a river going down Date Ave as it came off the foothills running downhill and would flood out lower Yucaipa. We also could see the fire in the Anaheim Hills from the upstairs windows. We lived at 3200 feet so you have all that water coming down out of the mountains and foothills into the basin areas.

Hope everyone stays safe and stay away from the dips in the roads that flood.

The all-caps typography reminds me of being stationed in a remote area and having a Teletype machine clacking and printing its all-caps text across the roll of paper.

When a text message had completed and automatically advanced the paper roll several spaces and announced said completion by a bell, it was hard not to see them as important, rush over and tear them off for the boss.

Every message, however everyday and banal it might have been, seemed imbued with importance.

Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been in all-caps, would it?

The character cartridge had no room for lower case by design; we had two of them in our weather station; one night the active one went down and I turned on the backup - after studying th working one and the failed one, I saw that the problem was simply that the cartridge had come loose from its clips.

I reinserted it and switched back. When the tech showed up I told him and he serviced it anyway and installed a new cartridge.

They were our lifeline to the info world.

Still raining heavily here - Huntington/Westminster.

Although it is very welcome, thoughts have to be those folks living in the burn areas.
