Family, politicos and a well-lived lifetime's worth of friends and admirers will gather in Moriarty on Thursday to say their final goodbyes to Alice King, the popular and highly respected wife of former three-term Gov. Bruce King.
State Attorney General Gary King, one of the Kings' two sons, said during a news conference Monday that a public funeral service for his mother has been set for 9 a.m. Thursday inside the Moriarty High School gymnasium, which is expected to be filled to capacity with all of the about 2,500 seats taken.
The burial for Alice King, who was 78, will take place following the funeral at the cemetery in Stanley, near the ranch she and Bruce King have called home for decades.
He said his mother's body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the state Capitol Rotunda in Santa Fe.
Alice King and Bruce King were married for nearly 62 years, and Gary King said his father returned to the ranch Monday morning.
"I'm obviously very proud. She is one of the historic figures in New Mexico," Gary King said of his mother. "She developed that legacy coming from a dairy farm background in New Mexico. She did a lot of it with her own strength of will, and her intelligence, and a lot of fortitude.
"I think that's what you get out of being a farmer and a rancher is that sense of, 'If you can't get it done easily, it doesn't mean it can't be done. You just have to get out and work,' " he said.

And Bruce was a historic figure too. Even when he wasn't governor, I remember him coming into the Furr's Cafeteria on Cordova Road in Santa Fe for breakfast or lunch and walking around and greeting patrons, even those he didn't know (but I suspect he got to know them.) They worked hard for the state and not themselves. You can disagree with their politics sometimes, but they were a fine family who had the State's interest at heart. May she rest in peace and warm condolences to Bruce, Gary and the entire family.
Donations in lieu of flowers to The New Mexico Girls Ranch, which Alice King helped to create; the New Mexico Children's Foundation, which she founded; and the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, which she strongly supported.

I understand exactly what you mean- great family, and even though I didn’t always agree with the politics I thought Gov. King was a fine governor- just as you said he always thought about the state and the people when making decisions- not himself.
I thought Alice was a fine person and I knew her passion was to help children- not just talk about it like many politicians and their wives do.
Thank you for posting this.
Rest in peace strong lady. Your work on earth is done.
Unlike our current governor.
BTW, I don't recall but seeing his wife Barbara mentioned or seen but very few times during the whole of Richardson's tenure. Either she really shies from attention or he wants all of it himself.
You're welcome.
Other thoughts: Married 62 years; you married a partner for life back then. I really expected Bruce's health problems (hip replacement and other things) to catch up with him first. It will be lonely without her and her support. He will greatly need family and friends from now on.
The respect for Alice King cannot be measured, or quantified. She was one hell of a lady, and worked harder for children than any other First Lady.
I have always felt that 'wealth' is not measured by the money you have or the 'legacy' you leave, but by the lives you touch and leaving the world a better place than you found it.
Alice King did those things.
They ended up buying the land for their current location from the former Gov. King.
I'm quite certain that some NM Freepers are members.
The other day I was talking to a Texan and he wanted to know what experience we had with Richardson as governor and if I thought he would be a good commerce secretary- hah- I told him Richardson sure knew how to spend money, other than that I am not sure what he is good at.
Come to think of it, you’re right about his wife- talk about low profile.
