The NHL rarely is amused by anything Sean Avery says or does, and proved it again by suspending the former Ranger pest Tuesday night for what the league termed "inappropriate" comments and conduct "detrimental" to the game of hockey.
Avery, who left the Blueshirts to sign a four-year $15.5 million deal last summer with Dallas, was banned indefinitely pending a hearing with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for making derogatory comments about his former girlfriend - actress Elisha Cuthbert, who currently is dating Calgary star defenseman Dion Phaneuf - before Tuesday night's game between the Stars and the Flames.

Indefinite suspension sounds pretty harsh. Oh well.
What Avery said was childish, but worthy of suspension? The NHL is turning into a girls school.
he’s a jerk, she’s a slut and what he says about her is between him and her. If she wants to sue him thats her perogitive. NHL should mind their own business.
This is the league that is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the movie “Slapshot” and they suspend a player for making a comment about his ex. Two games for almost killing the Bruins’ Bergeron. But talking, whoa!
He made a joke about “sloppy seconds” and he gets this? What the heck is wrong with us? WHERE HAS OUR SENSE OF HUMOR GONE!
I never knew that professional ice hockey players were expected to be gentlemen. I guess Wayne Gretzky raised the bar for the league.
I guess the Stars aren’t getting their money’s worth out of him anyway. Three goals and seven assists. I haven’t watched all of their games this year but I have yet to see the “gritty” play that we were promised.
Any woman who has sex with a man to whom she is not married has little room to complain. Same goes for any woman who would have sex with Avery, since Avery apparently doesn't care that he is a horn dog.
there's trash talking and then there's this kind of stuff that has zero to do with hockey.
it's conduct detrimental to the league. the league can do whatever it wants. my guess is "indefinite" turns out to be about 3 games.
Despite the roughness of the sport, hockey players tend not to have as many issues off-ice as, say, football and basketball players.
It's probably a function of where these guys come from- you're talking about a lot of kids from small towns in Quebec, the rest of Canada, the northern US, as well as Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. You get few players from screwed up ghetto environments. The cost of equipment means that these guys tend to come from more middle-class backgrounds.
Tie Domi, a notorious goon, is an incredibly nice guy off-ice and is involved with various charitaties.
Unless they are in high school, not too many who aren't.
would he had been banned if he said, “Everyone in the NHL wants to check her from behind?”
Who knew someone stole the only pair of balls the NHL had?
"I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about."
That's it?
Sloppy seconds. Sure. I buy that NOT.
Fantastic comment! Thanks for a great laugh!
