My mom has AOL. I had to rig the computer to do dailup to post this. She also has a wireless broadband. However, I cannot bridge the two together to get internet service over the wireless broadband.
When I turn on the computer I am getting internet connection, but I cannot log onto the internet.
She has a Netgear wireless router with a motorola cable modem. She has windows XP.
Can anyone help?
Thank you!
btw, I wasn't bitten by a moose and I am logged on.
I am getting an “Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection” and a “PPP adapter”.
Dare we ask for pictures? To determine "guilt?"
yes that’s what I am getting
There is a WEP key on the bottom of the router..try what I said you on post 12
no there isn’t one.
The PPP adapter must be an AOL thing ...
When I am using the laptop via wireless only, with the ethernet cable disconnected, I see
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State .... Media disconnected
Which is what I expect to see with the network cable disconnected ...
and
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : home
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
If it shows you the wireless information, similar to above, try to open a browser, Internet Explorer or Firefox, and put the default gateway IP addresss in the URL box and see if you can connect to the router.
They all say that.
Will this allow me to connect directly from the desktop to the internet?
Then you have to clone your PC MAC to the wireless router (via router Admin screen). Then your router will be able to access, too.
Good luck.
for a Netgear router, you might want to try
admin
password
or
admin
password1
to login
I predict many hilarious responses.
I dunno anymore, I’m installing linux and a bunch of new toys and its taking all my brain cells right now.
Well, the MACID they can see is the cable modem, so you can only connect one modem to the cable, but then behind that you put a router/wireless AP, and you’ll still be able to access the net with multiple PC’s.
That happened to me i was caused by spy ware.
I agree get network magic.
But when adding anything to it wireless you have to
keep in mind...network magic has a “wireless network lock” under wireless connections.
Disable the lock, connect your wireless device to the network, the re-enable the lock.
this will secure your wireless device to the network.
I have seen TOO MANY people who use network magic, think there wireless cards/routers were broken because they couldn’t connect to the internet because of this.
Happy thanksgiving to you and all your family!
DNS Server??? Check to see if your IP provider has recommended DNS settings. Without that assigned to either your router setup or your TCP/IP settings you can’t resolve internet names. It will also prevent you from accessing email.
Have you tried bouncing that router?
