I was just wondering, what are some of the favorite Freeper movies out there which honor American veterans?
Here's a quick list of a few of my favorites. I don't think you can go wrong watching any of these today.
- Saving Private Ryan
- Glory
- Midway
- We Were Soldiers
- Black Hawk Down
So what are your favorites?

The Wind and the Lion

The Fighting Leathernecks, Heartbreak Ridge
The Fighting Sullivans.
It was on TCM. They’ll probably show it again. I’ve got the DVD also. Excellent movie.
*sob!*
Another of my favorites is "U-571".
Best Years of our Lives...the ultimate homecoming movie.
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo up next on TCM.
Lighten up. Its Veterans Day.
They’re patriotic efforts and besides, war propaganda was used by all sides.
Have you noticed how some war movies made in the Forties and Fifties look clean and steril. Compare “Saving Private Ryan” with “To Hell and Back.” Audie Murphy’s movie should have been named “To Heck and Back.” Producers and Directors are getting it right.
The Longest Day
In Harms Way
Band of Brothers
Dr Strangelove for the lighter side
The Bedford Incident
And a couple more:
1941 (to bust a gut laughing)
Strategic Air Command (I was raised in SAC and remain a SAC man)
Since you mentioned “The Fighting Sullivans” I’ll mention “Since You Went Away.” Keep a box of Kleenex handy, maybe two.
12 O'clock High
The Fighting Seabees
(My Grandfather served as a Seabee in WWII.)
So cussing and seeing a man ripped in half makes for a good movie.
Gotcha!
You father was a Seabee; my father was in the Signal Corps. The only Signal Corps movie that I know of is “Good Morning Viet Nam.” Golly!
That is a matter of opinion. Theres no accounting for taste. My Dad fought in the Battle of the Bulge and he thought the film "Battleground" was the most authentic war film he ever saw. Before the days of anything goes in movies, people read a lot more and used their imagination to fill in the blanks. Cussing is not fundamental.
