The ultimate number of murders of Jews that night is believed to have been several times the preliminary figure. Heydrich himself a day after his preliminary report gave the number of Jewish shops looted as 7,500. There were also some cases of rape, which Major Buch's party court, judging by its own report, considered worse than murder, since they violated the Nuremberg racial laws which forbade sexual intercourse between Gentiles and Jews. Such offenders were expelled from the party and turned over to the civil courts. Party members who simply murdered Jews "cannot be punished," Major Buch argued, since they had merely carried out orders. On that point he was quite blunt. "The public, down to the last man," he wrote, "realizes that political drives like those of November 9 were organized and directed by the party, whether this is admitted or not."*
* Major Buch's report gives an authentic picture of justice in the Third Reich. "In the following cases of killing Jews," one part reads, "proceedings were suspended or minor punishments were pronounced." He then cites a large number of such "cases," giving the names of the murdered and the murderers. "Party Member Fruehling, August, because of shooting of the Jewish couple Goldberg and because of shooting of the Jew Sinasohn . . . Party Members Behring, Willi, and Heike, Josef, because of the shooting of the Jew Rosenbaum and the Jewess Zwienicki . . . It started with articles about how Jews ‘smelled’ and how they treated their children poorly. And then it was rumors about how they actually ate children. And eventually you get the events of Kristallnact and then total enslavement.
But it all started with media conspiring with the government to ‘other’ one group. Not that I think conservatives are going to be rounded up any time soon but the tactics are the same and we are now up to the ‘questions of the legitimacy’ of conservative children like Trig Palin. Not much of a step from there to just suggesting that he be aborted because his mother is a conservative. (oops, that already happened on DU and HuffPo).

Architectural plans for the infamous Auschwitz death camp, revealed by German newspaper Bild on November 8, gave further testimony to the fact that the planners and executioners knew that Auschwitz was intended for the extermination of human beings. These were post-construction plans, drawn up after the construction of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination complex on the base of an old military camp of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Bild reported that Dr. Hans-Dieter Kreikamp, chief director of the federal archives in Berlin, said the find was of “extraordinary importance.” Furthermore, said Kreikamp, “The plans are authentic certificates of a systematically planned genocide of European Jews.” Architectural drawings that included floor plans, side-elevations, and maps were found in an abandoned apartment in Berlin. They were drawn sometime between 1941 and 1943, showing detailed plans for prisoner barracks and chambers for murdering inmates with poison gas. The chambers were clearly marked “Gaskammer” – gas chamber.
The yellowed drawings, in one case, bore the signature of SS Kommandant Heinrich Himmler. The second-most powerful man in Nazi Germany, Himmler was the overall director of concentration camps, death camps, and Einsatzgruppen – task forces that carried out extermination orders. As the plans show a “Laundry and shower room” leading into a “Dressing room” and then to the “Gas chamber,” there could be no doubt of the purpose of the large room marked Gaskammer. The documents rebut the last of those who would deny the Holocaust, Bild said in its report.
On January 20, 1942, Nazi officials met in the resort of Wannsee east of Berlin where they planned the Final Solution. This has traditionally been taken by historians as the beginning of the Nazis’ extermination campaign. At least one of the newly-discovered drawings predates the infamous Wannsee Conference by eight months, and sheds new light on the chronology of the German genocide machine.”

In all of Europe, and not just Germany, there is a very long history of violent anti-Judaism. In this long context, the events of Kristallnact were not particularly noteworthy -- they were just one event of many, and many were far bloodier.
Indeed, until the Second World War, when Jews were first murdered on a systematic mass scale, the Nazi persecutions might even be considered just a reversion to what was normal -- before, roughly speaking, the Age of Enlightenment and Napoleonic laws.
Understand, I'm not trying to minimize Kristallnact, I'm only saying it wasn't quite the aberration we might today consider it.
