Making Money During The Obama Years? (Vanity)
11/09/08 | Misterrob

Okay, so we are looking at a few years of outright democrat control of the WH, Senate and House. The prospects for Americans is rather dour on the whole but there are ways to prosper and build "something" for the future. I fully expect people to jump on and complain about outright government confiscation of wealth and compensation and whatever else they need to say but there are other places to rant about that.

What I would like to start a discussion on is how people can make money for themselves, their families and the causes that they choose to donate to over the next few years.

Inflation is more than likely to appear in 2 years with the low interest rates and borrowing of money.

Carbon rules are likely to be implemented so expect costs to increase across the board.

More subsidies for alt. fuels is a pretty sure thing.

Oil is a wild card right now. Oil drilling is going to be on hold while prices fall. The democrats said that drilling would be on the table. Can we expect them to take it off? (Consider that gas prices are going to spike again. That alone could cost them a general election and "Hey man you smell" is pretty shrewd in amassing power. He put candidates up in 2006 that would never stand a chance in winning in liberal districts but they won in more conservative areas so the bottom line is he's about winning, not adherence to a pure liberal dogma.)

Bio fuels means more artificial demand which portends for higher prices and bubble creation. But, there is also derivative product potential that I was just clued into.

Involvement in the auto industry means that the domestic manufacturers are going to have to build cars that they wouldn't otherwise. The supply chain is going to be impacted in a major way.

So, with some of those thoughts in mind, can we talk about sectors, technologies, commodity markets or companies that might be worth looking at? The proviso is, of course, that this discussion is for informative purposes only. If you want to just rant then please go somewhere else. Don't ruin the discussion for other people might want to hear about opportunities.

...and remember where no receipts are made no tracks are laid.

That is a good rule of thumb for firearms purchases too.

Buy from private parties. That might be a little difficult at this time with sales being brisk. Give it six to nine months and a lot of these current purchases will be on the market as private sales. Caveat; don't wait until Congress starts working on the next big gun-ban bill. That will spur another surge in sales that will make this one look sluggish and lackluster.

I think the dollar tree type of stores are going to be a good place to go to.

Yeah, Dollar Tree's will make a killing, well, I already buy stuff there, I'm strapped financially to tell you the truth, stuff like candy and batteries. I buy "C" batteries there for my "crisis radio," a 1970's era portable AM/FM radio that gets shortwave and VHF/UHF police bands. There is another Dollar Store too, Family Dollar, but they go a little higher to things like 5 dollars. I expect Wal*Mart to do well too.

Shortwave radios, in case of the fairness doctrine, shortwave will be our only source of real news.

Auto salvage yards do very well in economic lean times. People tend to shop for used parts and keep cars longer. They are also an all cash business....., not that anyone would ever want to hide income or anything like that. Also, pawn and coin shops do well..., the former in down times, the latter in inflationary times. The problem with coin shops is that no one has any silver or gold to sell right now!!! You can probably do ok as a sideline income going to www.seekbullion.com and flipping the msdse on ebay. (Note: I am in no way affiliated with this website, the auction, or the people who own it. I am not even a registered seller)

I suggest also looking at GRN, an ETN that attempts to replicate the total return of the Barclays Capital Global Carbon Index (an index of carbon credit plans).

That is why one should have ample cash withdrawn from the system now.

Depending on the gold fund, it could be a smart move. I think that we are poised for high inflation over the next few years, and once hedgies stop unloading to meet redemptions, gold and the miners will do well.

The junior miners may do better than the majors. You may want to see how the fund has allocated its resources between majors and juniors.

Your tributes to Fearless Leader Barack Obama (pbuh) had better not be sarcastic in the future.

Bump for later. One of my favorite subjects. Having ‘quality family time’ right now. Blech! LOL! :)

It’s a good suggestion and thread. Someone mentioned rural real estate. IMO, that would be good only for lots with low property taxes and only in areas that will likely see development in the years ahead. During these lazy generations of non-builders, selling vacant land can be a long term effort, and mortgages, difficult to find (or bad terms).

What ever happens next to the economy, it will be nasty. Better to pay cash for a small plot of land in the country and grow your own crops. Food shelves may be empty in all the major cities next year . . . Naaaaah! Just joking. LOL, LOL !

That’s the spirit!

Perfect because the Obamites might misinterpret the message as supportive.

"Personally, I am looking hard at commodities (metals, corn and oil), emerging foreign markets, alternative energy markets and apartment REITS."

I agree with what you stated in terms of commodities and also the alternative energy sector.

If it's up to OPEC & Russia, the 'energies' will not remain in this bearish mode.

They are facing weak demand for their products due to economic factors. If they jack up prices by cutting supply then they are only cutting their own throats. No, the best plan is to lay low, do nothing to increase available supply and wait for the market to recover. Otherwise they can expect to see oil fall another 20% from where it is and inly sustainable at a limited supply.
