On the evening of November 9, according to a secret report made by the chief party judge, Major Walther Buch, Dr. Goebbels issued instructions that "spontaneous demonstrations" were to be "organized and executed" during the night. But the real organizer was Reinhard Heydrich, the sinister thirty-four-year-old Number Two man, after Himmler, in the S.S., who ran the Security Service (S.D.) and the Gestapo. His teletyped orders during the evening are among the captured German documents.

its amazing to read how Hitler prsented himself as a man of peace. right up to the invasion of poland.
Can I join that pinglist?
What was more shocking was the story about the Democrat Senator who wanted the biggest, best navy in the world...
A democrat? My how times have changed.
Interesting article that our current generation most likely has no clue of short of those that actually went to school and studied about it.
History repeating itself almost identically.
What goes around comes around.
>A democrat? My how times have changed.<
That was during the time that democrats still loved this country.
i want some of that 75 cent steak dinner
Consider yourself joined. Welcome aboard.
What is this all about?
I might like to be on ping list but need for info.
THANKS.
I seem to have omitted some vital information. They offer the 75 cent roast beef with Yorkshire pudding on the 9th floor and a corset show on the 2nd floor, but it doesn't tell us the name of the establishment.
We follow events of seventy years ago, to the day, as covered by the New York Times. Although something happened on November 8, 1938 which delayed the news by a day.
I also add excerpts from relevent histories, like the one from Rise and Fall of the Third Reich posted on this thread. Everyone is welcome to add his or her own nuggets of history or point out parallels from today. I also throw in sports coverage, movie reviews and other items of general interest. Eventually the plan is to offer day-to-day coverage of World War II. There is a lot of collective knowledge at Free Republic and I generally learn something new with each post.
It actually sounds very interesting but I will pass for now since I have so much reading to do just from my college classes.
Thanks for the explanation though. I will keep it in mind for when I’m done with school.
A democrat? My how times have changed."
It's well worth remembering that President Roosevelt was Under Secretary of the Navy during the First World War, and was in charge of Naval Intelligence. And since there was no "C.I.A." in those days, that was as close to a national intelligence agency as America then had.
So, I think it's no accident that, in 1938, the US already had the second largest navy -- after Britain's, and I'm not even certain Britain's was that much larger.
At the same time, there's no other way to say it: the US Army was pathetically small.
Point is: I'd suspect this Texas Senator Connally was really speaking for Franklin Roosevelt.
I wonder what documents might come to light in future years regarding our recent election.
Yeah, I think I'll miss that. That has to look like sack of dead cats on parade.
