The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Why not make this mandatory to get your welfare check if you have been in the system for longer than say, 6 months? I guess it would stigmatize them too much to do an honest days work. They may not vote for someone who actually makes them work for a change.

Require will be the way for maybe a year. Then mandatory. Then a year later, jail if you do not cooperate. They a year later the gas chamber. Hail Obama.

Huge secular private schools already do this. It is a requirement that so many hours must be worked in a respective church or related organization in order to finish school. Have a granddaughter under this requirement.
There are plenty here on FR (myself included) who, out of their own free will, donate copious amounts of of money and time to charities. We're all the better for it, IMHO.
However, when "encouraged" to do so by the gov't, likely at the point of a sword, I think that such contributions would dry up quickly. Mention the words "United Way" here on FR, for instance, and see what responses are received.
Of all the things Obama wants to implement, I think that this single article scares me the most. Worst yet, IMHO it will be "For the Children" and destined to pass.
Getting ourselves into a non-cash-based economy as quickly as possible is my goal, if we can find neighbors in our rural area who aren’t sold out Democrat/Communists for Obama. I know some of our neighbors were willing to throw us under the bus and kick us to the curb for Clinton’s sake. I doubt they can figure out exactly what their blind Clinton worship has wrought. I hope there are some who can read the signs of the times.

Oh, don’t worry. The “creature” described by the MSM (NOW they tell us) can easily talk the majority of people into lining up in droves to get the “banking records” tattoo in either their right hands or on their foreheads. That way, the “cashless” society can be established, and complete tracking and control through a small computer chip will be the best thing since sliced bread and used in buying and selling - all transactions. After a while, no one will use that “nasty” old cash or coin economy any more. Technological advancements are SO highly regarded and EVERYONE always gets on board for the “latest” convenient innovation these days.

I think I gave you some bad information, and want to clarify. I just looked through my volumes of the Gulag Archepelago and can’t find anything which supports my statement that the term “zek” was used only for political prisoners. It appears that “zek” comes from the russian word for prisoner...”zaklyuchennye.” The political prisoners convicted of Article 58 were simply referred to as 58’s, though what I said about the treatment they received is true. It’s been many years since I’ve read those books, and I’ve had that impression all that time for some reason. I apologize for the mistake.
