Help. I can't get the cd-writer to slide open. The old computer had a little hole so the paper clip trick would work, but this computer doesn't have the little hole or at least I don't see it.
Can anyone help?
try rebooting?
The green light lights up and I can hear it trying to open...
What have you tried so far? Rebooting might indeed work.
If it’s trying to open get a very thin screwdriver and give it a slight outward nudge in any crevice you can find while pressing the button. The cd could also be misaligned and a very (careful) light shaking might help.
Not knowing the computer, that’s uncertain. However, with Macs, you hold the mouse down when you turn on the computer. The CD tray will slide open.
excuse me but why would you IBTZ (whatever that means) someone for simply asking for help.
Obviously you’re not one of those compassionate conservatives.....
The problem is that the CD ROM in the drive is having read errors (dirty or scratched). You have to keep the drive from trying to autostart and computer from trying to read the ROM. So, basically disable autostart in Windows (find instruction on the web for your operating system flavor)and reboot in safe mode. Open my computer (when drive is not trying to read), right click on cd drive icon and select eject. Should work.
Ok, rebooted and still nothing.
Open Windows Media Player, go to the Play menu, hit Eject
Usually works for me when the CD/DVD player freaks out and won’t open.

IBTZ (I bet there zotted)
Zot threads in the good ole days were always fun on Freerepublic, the graphics were outstanding. However, I don’t remember anyone ever getting zotted for asking a simple computer question.
It’s caught on something.
I’ll be back in a few minutes - Junior didn’t do homework (!) last night and needs computer for a few.
Some HP-Compaq tower models have a front cover with bottom hinged doors over the optical drive bays. I’ve found the easiest way to access the front of the actual drive is to gently press the very bottom of this door until it moves enough to pull it down from the top. this will expose the drive and you should see the âpaper clip holeâ you mentioned.
Do you have the drive model/manufacturer?
I put 2 dvd-writers in my PC. Both happen to be Sony and, although they are diffent model numbers, both have a tiny hole for emergency access.

Reboot.
If that doesn’t allow access. Try loading your CD burner software and use the ‘eject CD’ button/menu command.

If you are familiar with DOS operatings, you might try running ejectcd.exe from DOS.

Can you read the CD via your file manager/file explorer?
Disabled autostart? The drive will not eject if spinning and trying to read.
IBTZ (In before the Zot) — depends on which acronym suits your fancy...
Cool, I fixed it. Thanks for the help!
