Turn off the turbo!!

Posted on 11/04/2008 7:23:21 AM PST by djf

Many folks here use Firefox. And if you're like me, and have a highspeed connection, you might have amped up your parallel request processing.

So for today, you can turn it back down.

Type in about:config in the address bar.

Set network.http.max-connections to a low value, 2 or 3 should be good.

Set network.http-pipelining.maxrequests to a similar value, say 4 or 5.

Ramp it back up tomorrow!

Better yet, why don’t you turn off your computer.

I am not hammering you in any way, but if you don’t know what it’s about, then you probably never turbocharged your browser.

So you’re ok.

Freepmail me tomorrow and I will explain everything.

Don’t mind being hammered, if it’s due! LOL.

I usually try and have everything functioning at top speed but I don’t recall about FireFox.

I tend to often have it and IE7 open at the same time.

In both, though, last day or 3, on FR ONLY have not been able to read a FREEPMAIL after clicking on the FREEPMAIL title. Just shows blank where msg should be.

REFRESHING will sometimes show the message and hitting reply will tend to show the msg.

Also, in the threads, the recent posts will be truncated in mid sentence . . . sometimes after a few words or a few lines—and the rest of the post entirely missing.

Any clue what might be going on?

REBOOTING hasn’t helped.

I have several of the best anti-spyware etc. scanning several times a day/night.

What this will do is limit the number of simultaneous connections to a single website Firefox will perform.

Since FreeRepublic only has two small images on the browse page anyway, and they would be cached, this won’t do anything positive. I recommend not making this change.

Multiply that by thousands of people on tens of thousands of threads...

But what do I know? I only had my first computer job in like 1975.

I will not turn off my turbo. It makes driving more fun and provides more torque.

Ahhhhh . . .

So, it would lessen the load on FR’s servers?

Wouldn’t that be a help today?

I confess, I’m often guilty of loading several different threads at one time. Guess I should’t today.

Much appreciate the input.

BTW, why isn’t FR going to the thread post # that one clicks on any more???

What’s with the attitude? This will make NO difference on FreeRepublic. To prove it, go to Tools and select Page Info. Then click Media. This is the content that would be simultaneously downloaded. Notice the fact that there are two files on the browse page - favicon.ico (2.19KB) and speaker.gif (.87KB), both of which are cached.

On any thread with images, FR is not hosting the images. Thus they will download simultaneously with the FR connection no matter what your value is set at.

If FreeRepublic was a media-rich site like FoxNews.com, it may make a difference... but not much of one. Instead of downloading the content in short bursts, it’d spread out the data over a longer period of time. Over thousands of viewers, this would essentially make no difference.

Now, if you had the value set at 50, that’d make a big difference.

Loading multiple threads at one time does initiate up to the maximum number of connections that this setting is set at. But as I mentioned, the only difference setting this to a lower number would do is spread out your data bursts over time, but still download the same data.

Simultaneous connections? HTTP is a connectionless protocol, so I am not sure what you mean. Could you elaborate? Thanks.

HTTP is not a connectionless protocol, meaning it must establish a connection before sending and receiving data - it does not broadcast data with no regards to its receipt.

It is, however, a stateless protocol, meaning connections are independent from any prior connection - persistent data must be re-sent and stored client- or server-side.

OK, thanks, I was confusing TCP with UDP.
