“Such gossip has since dwindled.”
Obama appreciates the example and the precedent.
I will puff this thread up a bit by throwing in Tom McClintock's California ballot measure recommendations in case a perplexed Golden State voter comes across it. For the record, Homer is going against Tom's recommendations on two of these measures.
Prop. 1A High Speed Rail Bond. NO
This is the most outrageously expensive boondoggle in Californias long history of outrageously expensive boondoggles. The ultimate cost of this project could end up exceeding $90 billion or $10,000 per family all for a train that goes from Los Angeles to San Francisco in two hours longer than it takes to fly. Its brought to you by the same folks who botched Bostons Big Dig. (Im one of the official opponents of this measure.)
Prop. 2 Farm Animals. NO
Sorry, but farm animals are food, not friends. Plan on somewhat happier cows and much higher grocery bills if this one passes.
Prop. 3 Hospital Bond. NO
Heres a rather cynical measure that uses children as a front in order to lavish taxpayer funds on private hospital corporations.
Prop. 4 Parental Notification. YES
Parents must give written consent before their teenage daughters use a tanning booth or get their ears pierced. This measure simply requires them to be notified if their daughter is having an abortion.
Prop. 5 Non-violent drug offenses. NO
The fatal flaw in this otherwise decent measure would allow criminals to use their drug offense for leniency for other non-drug-related crimes.
Prop. 6 Police and Law Enforcement Funding. YES
This is a tough call. My favorite provision is prohibiting the release on bail of illegal aliens charged with violent crimes. Its principal purpose is to lock up an increasing portion of the state budget for local law enforcement. Law enforcement should be governments top priority, but I dont like auto-pilot spending or using state resources for local programs. I also dont like its weakening of the hearsay rule. On balance I think it does more good than harm, but its a very mixed bag.
Prop. 7 Renewable Energy Subsidies. NO
This will send electricity prices through the roof. It requires the most expensive energy generation to comprise 20 percent of our electricity needs. Government should get out of the way and let simple economics determine the mix of energy generation in this state.
Prop. 8 Defense of Marriage Act. YES
Marriage is a unique institution in which a man and a woman summon a child into the world creating a unique tapestry of responsibilities. Our marriage laws are designed to support those responsibilities and are simply inapplicable to any other kind of relationship. Lincoln asked, If you call a tail a leg, how many legs has a dog? The answer is four. Calling a tail a leg doesnt make it one. And calling a homosexual partnership a marriage doesnt make it one.
Prop. 9 Parole Reform. YES
This requires the victim to be considered when a suspects bail is being set or a criminals parole is being determined. About bloody time.
Prop. 10 Fuel Subsidies. NO
This $5 billion bond will cost taxpayers $10 billion with interest to subsidize alternative fuel vehicles and renewable energy. Im all for alternative fuel vehicles and renewable energy as long as the consumers who want them pay for them. But dont reach into my pocket to pay for somebody elses choice.
Prop. 11 Redistricting. YES
This should be the all-time no brainer: voters should choose their politicians and not the other way around. This measure takes redistricting out of the hands of the legislature, removing an obvious conflict of interest.
Prop. 12 Veterans Bond Act. YES
This is a self-liquidating bond (meaning taxpayers arent on the hook) to assist veterans with home purchases. The state has done this for many years and it has never cost taxpayers a dime. I co-authored this one.
Homer, your public ballot measures are ruining your state. I’ve seen how they led to energy crises about 10 years ago. Nobody wants an electric generation plant, whether coal, gas or nuclear, to be built anywhere in California. But they all expect to have cheap electricity. Your fellow Californians assume electricity is created at no cost some other place and magically transferred to their home electric outlets.
No wonder California is going to vote 0bama. He could promise free ham trees for every house and your average California voter is stupid and selfish enough to believe it.
No wonder your state is a mess.
You should check out our constitution some time if you want to see objective proof of your statement. It is a complete mess. Whenever the permanent majority party wants to advance their socialist agenda without getting their hands dirtier they put a measure on the ballot to restrict freedom or steal more money and call it the Save the Environment/Children/Schools/Women and Minorities act of 200X and it passes in a landslide.
I am curious. Did you reveal the identity of the egagement in your naval battle analogy you posted on an election thread a few days ago?
I’m surprised there are any businesses left in California, other than the entertainment “industry.”
As for the naval engagement, yes, I did get around to answering it. I pinged everyone who’d answered but I think your post went up while I was composing my response, so you got missed.
The answer is: The engagement at Surigao Strait as part of the much greater and more complex Battle of Leyte Gulf. That battle has always fascinated me. It had a bit of everything; old WW1 dreadnoughts slugging it out in a night gunnery duel, mass airstrikes on several battle fleets, submarine action, amphibious operation, dawn of the “cruise missle” (guided by a human brain, not an electronic one), the valiant stand of small ships against hopeless odds. I doubt we’ll see anything like that ever again.
So Adolph didn’t have many lady friends? Did the boys in pink keep him busy?
I’m concerned that the Left has always looked to the films of Leni Riefenstahl and Sergei Eistenstein (Nazi and Communist propagandists). They claim to not be admirers of the messages contained in the films but they clearly are taken by the ability to persuade public opinion through propaganda.
Camera angles and editing are secondary to why they triumph these films. It’s like raising up Deep Throat and saying so few other directors could have kept an audience’s attention in an hour long film with only 8 minutes of dialogue.

That is downright scary.
Well, Eva Braun started to get more involved. And, of course, Unity Mitford was taking up some of his time.
Eva, Unity, Geli, the list is actually quite long.
You might want to google night.of.the.long.knives sometime to see what Hitler did to guys who got caught in bed with Hitler Youth.
There’s that, plus a few late night visits by ACORN volunteers, oops, I mean Brown Shirts.
I thought reply #10 on this thread relates well to your essay on another thread. These pictures give me a chill every time I see them.
