Plea from a democratic

I’m not trying to hide, you may know right up front that I am a very liberal democratic. I know of your site from DU. If your policy requires deleting this post, then it will only be a small waste of my time.

I have had a rough eight years. Not financially, I do OK. Not in personal loss, I have lost no one I know or love to either of these tragic costly wars. No, I’m not someone who can claim a direct path between my misery and W. My disdain for this president, his inner circle, Republicans on the hill and every last person responsible for the affront to ideals I hold personally important, they have cost ME little. No… Not me. I cry for those whose lives have suffered directly through these long eight years. I include most of you in that group. Most people have been directly affected by policy over the last eight years, and for most, it has been tough.

So, as we move past what I consider a blight on our nations character, I expect you to perceive the reverse to be true. I’m not going to be able to write anything to change your perception. If Obama wins, you will feel bad. You will feel left out. It is my personal hope that all us liberals that have felt so bad, crushed and left out will be able to show you something new. You will still disagree with us, I don’t expect that to change. I do expect me, and my fellow democrats to not make you feel the same despair we suffered. Change is coming. You will not like some of it. It is our responsibility to reach out to our opponents, and not make them feel ignored, dismissed, or anything like we have had to feel for eight long years.

When, if, Obama wins. I hope you can share in positive change. I hope you see direct benefits in your lives.

Your attempt at constructing a creative post was pitiful. I mean, really, stringing together a bunch of insults among a load of babbling was hardly effective... Maybe later in life, after you have learned to read, write, spell, and count, you will have more success. True, these are rudimentary skills that many of us “normal” people take for granted that everyone has an easy time of mastering. But we sometimes forget that there are “challenged” persons in this world who find these things more difficult. If I had known, that this was your case then I would have never read your post. It just wouldn’t have been “right”. Sort of like parking in a handicap space. I wish you the best of luck in the emotional and social struggles that seem to be placing such a demand on you.

I'm sure that, like myself, most FReepers here appreciate your overt candor in coming to this site and openly declaring who you are.

That's rare. Mostly, we're accustomed to liberals trolling this site, and never speaking directly to us. Well done on being up-front with us.

If you spend some time here reading up on what we conservatives believe, and what we have learned about the world through direct observation, then you'll understand why your statement above might draw some derision.

First of all, no one on your side (including, and especially Obama) ever precisely defines this mysterious "change" you all are praying for.

You see, we conservatives believe that America is the most successful nation in the history of the world because of our Founding Ideals, which are codified into our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers.

So, what exactly do you liberals intend to "change" about this country that would make it more successful than it already has been?

Now, before you answer, I just want to say that no socialist solutions will be allowed. Those have all been proven by history to be utterly un-workable - so you'll have to leave out anything that smacks of greater entitlements, or higher taxes.

You've got to understand that we conservatives are a pragmatic bunch. We want to see things put in place that actually work, as opposed to those solutions that simply seem like a good idea, or make us feel good.

Being that we've got over 230 years worth of hard data about what does, and what does not work in political, financial, and social systems, we're very interested to know what possible solutions you liberals can bring to the table that will result in "positive change".

Mostly, we're concerned that you'll want to impose, well - liberal solutions to our problems, which historically, have all failed miserably.

So. What exactly do liberals intend to "change" about America that will make it a better, more successful country than it already is? Hope that doesn't all sound too snarky for you, but you've got to understand that we're all more than a bit suspicious of liberals and their ideas about "change".

I see you've been banned already, but I figure you can still access what's here, so I'm not going to take the approach of many of my fellow Freepers, which is just to wish you good riddance. I'm going to actually explain us to you, as if you and I were sitting together over a beer.

We understand that many people in this country are dismayed with the current President. We conservatives have gotten upset with him ourselves, but for way different reasons that people like yourself who usually vote for the Democratic Party. We are bothered with his apparent pandering to those who have come over our border illegally (my research over on the Democratic Underground board tells me that many on your side don't want the illegals stealing jobs here, either), and some of us are VERY upset that he has not pursued the war in Iraq as aggressively as we would have hoped.

I presume you are saddened over the great number of deaths that have occurred in Iraq, believe me, we conservatives are, too. Not so much over Iraqis that want to kill each other, but the loss of every American serviceperson over there is felt by each of us. Perhaps my fellow FReepers disagree with me, but I'd rather we never went into that place if we were not willing to give it absolutely everything we had to win it as absolutely soon as possible. That means leveling Fallujah the second that pictures of the dead burnt bodies of US contractors were hangin from that bridge, with all those Muslims cheering about it.

As to this election, make no mistake about it, John McCain is not the first choice of many here. Most of us here at Free Republic had another candidate as our first choice. But we also know that no matter how much John McCain has abandoned the principles we hold dear, we feel deeply in our hearts that Senator Barack Obama would lead this country in a far worse way that Senator McCain ever possibly could.

How do we know this? Because we know how much Senator McCain has sacrificed personally for this country. We look at the life of Senator Obama, and we see no such sacrifice. We see very little in the way of any meaningful experience. We examine the words of his speeches, and while we see some conciliatory language, we still see the words that tell us that his main appeal is to people whose idea of getting ahead is not to earn that advantage, but to gain it by taking things away from people who have earned it. That is the fundamental reason we distrust him, and why, as you put it, we will "feel bad" if he gets elected.

I'm sorry that you feel you've had it tough in the last several years. I've had things go wrong for me as well, I moved back East to be with the woman I love, and less than a year ago, after a seven month struggle, managed to finally find a full time job. That job is ending, they are closing the office building where I work, the folks in our finance department had their last day at work today.

I'm lucky. I found a part-time job a week ago that will begin in about a month working at a utility company.

Yet, through all that I've been through, I cannot buy Senator Obama's pretty words about some nebulous "change". I fear the change that his staunchest supporters would bring about, they are not mere tinkering around the edges of our economy that they seek, they are nothing but a total covetous desire to take what I have. I've spent my adult life fighting affirmative action, and I wonder why my generation of white males needs to pay the cost of five thousand years of alleged oppression of women and minorities. I was born in Canada, my ancestors never owned slaves or benefitted from them even indirectly. But Senator Obama represents the hope of those who seek to make me pay even more for a situation that I did not create.

Try not to see us all as some sort of knuckle-dragging cave dwellers that so many liberals see us as. I know that a lot of people who put their hopes in Senator Obama's words just want a better world. We just see different paths to get to that place.

To our DU poster: You are trying to reach out, and that is good. You are honest about where you are coming from, and I appreciate your honesty. The country is extremely polarized now; it’s almost as if we have two countries rather than one, so thank you for trying to bridge what at times seems an insurmountable gap.

I am an independent voter. I was extremely liberal when I was younger (more or less a social democrat) and have shifted to a more conservative point of view. I protested going into Iraq before we went in and do not at all like inflicting suffering on ordinary Iraqi people. On the other hand, you may have missed the story, but at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25546334/ there is an article about a secret US mission, recently completed, to haul 550 metric tons of yellowcake out of Iraq. Yellowcake is “the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment,” so perhaps Saddam really was on his way to developing nuclear weapons. The Bush administration did not want terrorists to get their hands on this material and so maintained secrecy until the shipment reached Canada.

In any event (I’m rambling a bit), Thomas Jefferson said, “A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.” I used to want the government to help the poor, but the best way to go about it is by teaching people how to fish rather than simply handing them fish. That’s my point of view now. It looks as if liberal democrats will be winning a lot in this election, so we’ll see how things work out.
