Abortion O= has made public statements for it M=Against except for rape, incest, life of the mother. M also has been for embryonic stem cell research though he appears to be moving away from that position and does not want new embryos created for this purpose.

Military in foreign countries Both are ‘okay’ with it, McCain would be stronger for the military and for national interests. Obama has stated he would use them in situations like Darfur.

Social Security - McCain believes that the issues with S.S. aren’t hard to solve but I personally haven’t heard his plan other than working in a bi-partisan manner.

Gun Control= O=for, M=against

Taxes
O’s public statement is that if you make under $250K you will have your taxes lowered. Scrutiny of his plan & his history says otherwise.

M does not want to raise taxes, particularly in this economy. He isn’t for taxing corporations because corporations create jobs. It’s a big boogey man to say “tax cuts for the rich”. The reality is tax cuts for the rich keep jobs here which benefits everyone.

This might help, at least regarding some issues:

It’s a 2-page Voters Guide.

Page 2 has links to websites offering proof of the candidates’ positions on the issues.

These are based not only on current candidate statements, but also voting records:

Abortion

Obama: Should be legal in all cases, for any reason, any procedure. No parental notification required for minors to get abortions. Heathcare workers should not be required to give medical care to infants who survive failed abortions, but should instead be allowed to let them die of exposure. Abortions should be government funded for those who can't afford them.

McCain: Parental notification required. Partial Birth Abortions illegal. Medical care required for infants who survive abortions. Roe v. Wade should be repealed so that, in keeping with the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, abortion restrictions are mostly left to the States.

Gun Control

Obama: Private handgun ownership should be illegal.

McCain: Constitutional right to own handguns. I believe, though, that he wanted to renew the Assault Weapons Ban.

Social Security

Obama: Keep everything the same and hope the projections of massive SS bankruptcy are unfounded.

McCain: Allow current workers to divert a portion of their FICA taxes to private investment accounts to provide for their own retirement. This will allow workers to get a higher return on retirement savings, thus getting more bang for their savings buck. It will also encourage investment, instead of government transfer payments. Keep benefits flowing for current recipients.

Troops Overseas

Obama: Create a 16 month withdrawl plan from Iraq. Invade Pakistan, or at least threaten to do so. Do nothing on Iran except sit down with Ahmedinejad without preconditions. "Israel is going to have to reconcile itself to a nuclear-armed Iran." Will not admit he was wrong in voting against the Surge. Refuses to implement successful Surge principles in Afghanistan.

McCain: Institute successful Surge principles in Afghanistan. May covertly allow some action inside Pakistan, but won't telegraph it, and doesn't believe it is yet the right time to start threatening Pakistan. Will use force if necessary to keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. Believes a time-table for Iraqi withdrawl will strengthen terrorists in Iraq by requiring us to leave even if Iraq is highly unstable.

Taxes

Obama: Allow Bush tax cuts to expire. Institute new "tax cuts" that give tax relief to 95% of Americans. Problem is only 55-60% of Americans actually pay taxes, so in Obama's plan 40-45% of Americans will instantly be put on welfare (literally, no joke). Raise taxes on small businesses, corporations, and those making over $250K a year. Claims he can cut taxes at the same time he can promise almost $1 trillion in new spending.

McCain: US has the second highest corporate tax rate of any country on earth, even higher than the socialist paradise of Sweden. Drop the US corporate tax rate from 40% to (I believe) 10%. This will create jobs and investment. Dramatically drop the capital gains tax rate from 15% to 7.5% temporarily, in order to free up capital to help solve the financial crisis. Make the Bush tax cuts permanent.

Healthcare

Obama: Fine poor parents for not providing health insurance to their children. Fine businesses for not providing health benefits. Refuses to say how much the fine is.

McCain: Provide a $5,000 refundable tax credit so employees can purchase their own health insurance, tailored to meet their specific needs, instead of relying on employer's choice. Allow workers to purchase health care plans from out-of-state insurers, thus opening up competition.

On guns, to clarify: Obama doesn’t admit that he wants to ban private handgun ownership, but this was his position when he was in the Illinois State Senate.

On abortion, to clarify: Obama doesn’t admit that he opposes requiring medical care for abortion-surviving infants, but he twice voted this way in the IL State Senate. He has said, in the primaries, that his first act in office will be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. This will repeal the federal Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which requires medical care for abortion-surviving infants. It will also repeal the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban, as well as any and all state-level abortion regulations.

Also, Obama had a huge change in his poisitions from the primaries to the general election, so he is hard to pin down. He also doesn’t like to give out any specifics. I am using his primary positions or his state senate positions where I believe it reflects his true intentions.
