Frankly, I could care less that Powell chose to endorse Obama for the presidency. However, I find his logic and reasoning for doing so very weak. It is like he tried to find a better answer than that Obama is the black guy, but couldn't.
And, Powell is quick to point out that he greatly respects McCain and knows that he has disappointed a long-time friend by making this endorsement. Sounds like Powell is conflicted about the endorsement, right?
Well, my biggest problem with the whole thing is the timing of his announcement. If he really respected McCain as he claims, he could have made this announcement two months ago. Powell said today he had made up his mind in the last couple of months.
Instead, he decides to wait until the closing days of a close election so that his decision will harm McCain the worst. (Or so he thinks). Even in endorsing the other guy, that is no way to show proper respect to an old friend. It is contemptible.
Lastly, I really believe that this will blow up in Obama's face. Middle America will see this for what it is. Powell sold his soul today and Obama will be paying the tab at the polls on November 4.
Back to the timing- why have Powell announce his support 16 days from election day instead of the weekend before? This allows McCain/ Palin time to recover. On top of this Obama buys air time on the 29th. Something isn't right.
IMHO, Obama has some polling data that scares him and he's responding to it. I also think the JTP issue is waking folks up.
I guess his ridiculous and embarrassing stage performance with the black street punks was a harbinger of things to come.
It was interesting that when national security was discussed Powell looked unconmfortable. Colin Powell has sold out to the liberal groups he works with and he wants to be part of an Obama administration.
His waiting till now shows he is playing games, he claims he didn’t decide till now.
If it’s still that close a decision in his liberal mind, VOTE MCCAIN!
So much for McCain’s angling for ‘centrists’ and ‘moderates’. When the time came it’s the centrists and moderates who deserted the man while conservatives stood by him. I hope McCain remembers that regardless of who wins the election.
“Black president good for all Americans” equals pure racism. Skin color can’t do anything and only a fool thinks it can.
He didn’t endorse Obama because he’s black, he endorsed him because he’s a freakin’ RINO, plain and simple. Powell disagrees with the Republican Party on 75% of the issues. There’s not hair’s breadth of difference between Powell and say, someone like Madleiene Albright on the issues other than that she’s probably more hawkish than he is.
Powell is a known proponent of racial preferences. No surprise he favors the affirmative action candidate.
Powell lied and people died.
Didn’t his sorry azz sit before the world and tell us what a threat Iraq was?
He may be the worst Sect. of State in our nation’s history.
You’re a racist Powell.
A multi-star General of the Army wants a communist as a President....I bet both Reagan and Churchill are rolling over in their respective graves and howling out to God....to save America from this commie insanity.
Ah, hes just trying to fit in with the rest of the 99.999% of the black electorate.
This race is ALL ABOUT RACE! Plain and simple
I don’t think powell’s endoresement will mean that much.
powell will provide cover for some black soldiers here and there - to vote for obama but I don’t most will need any cover. I just don’t think there are any undecideds among blacks. they’re mostly going for obama.
its the white vote that might be affected by powell. but once again I don’t think that a black guy endorsing a black will have much affect there.
but I could be wrong.
Heck, some months back I didn’t think obama would get more than 40% of the national vote.
Powell has never struck me as a deep, political thinker, or as someone who is comfortable with conservatism. From a political point of view, his endorsement of Obama doesn’t surprise me. What does surprise me is how Powell could endorse a man who treats our soldiers with conceit and smugness. Maybe Powell is as ignorant as most other Americans when it comes to knowing who Obama really is, or maybe it’s just a black guy sticking with a black guy, a different ignorance.
