Report: Cannabis Less Harmful Than Alcohol, Tobacco

Friday, October 3, 2008 9:19 AM

Cannabis is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, according to a report by a research charity Thursday, which called for a "serious rethink" of drug policy.

The Beckley Foundation, a charity which numbers senior experts and other academics among its advisors, said banning cannabis has no impact on supply and turns users into criminals.

"Although cannabis can have a negative impact on health, including mental health, in terms of relative harms it is considerably less harmful than alcohol or tobacco," says the report by the Foundation's Global Cannabis Commission.

The government is pressing for cannabis to be re-classified in law as a Class B drug compared with its current, less serious, Class C classification.

Authorities are concerned notably by the growing prevalence of the potent "skunk" form of the drug. Around 80 percent of cannabis seizures are of this strain, said to be linked to mental health problems, official figures show.

The Beckley Foundation, a charitable trust, claimed only two deaths worldwide have been attributed to cannabis, while alcohol and tobacco use together kill an estimated 150,000 people in Britain alone.

"Many of the harms associated with cannabis use are the result of prohibition itself, particularly the social harms arising from arrest and imprisonment," it said.

"It is only through a regulated market that we can better protect young people from the ever more potent forms of dope," it added.

The decision to reclassify cannabis upwards into the more punitive Class B category -- which includes amphetamines -- is a U-turn for the Labour government.

Cannabis was downgraded from Class B when Tony Blair was prime minister, but Gordon Brown announced a review of its status soon after taking over in June last year.

A third of the people between 15 and 60 in American could have told them that.

This may be so but one is still inhaling (unless you’re Bill Clinton) smoke which is the same stuff you are not supposed to inhale when your house is burning down.

By the way are we even allowed to smoke anymore? This should be moot at this point.

Now there's a self-apparent truth if ever I saw one! There's a jolly good reason why it is called "weed", and here in New Zealand it grows in our volcanic soil faster and stronger than any other plant I've ever seen.

A couple years ago I was driving down Scenic Drive (in the Waitakere Ranges: think "dense Vietnam Jungle" and then double it in density) and as I was coming around a twisty blind corner I nearly wiped into a couple of likely looking lads sauntering across the road with double armloads full of marijuana. Immense plants: more like extra-large shrubs. As if carrying large quantities of controlled substances was the most natural thing in the world to do on a Sunday afternoon...

One thing is dam'nsure: you can bet there was plenty more where that came from. And, naturally, I shook my head in disbelief and drove on without further comment.

It is a waste of police time and resources to try to control something so readily abundant. I'd far prefer our cops to focus on real criminals.

Agreed! I have trouble getting uptight or morally outraged at people smoking a little reefer. The SWAT yahoos knocking down peoples doors and the excessive jail terms handed down for pot is a bit over the top.

LACK OF brain cells aren't a health issue that was included in this study....Osama Obama inhaled FREQUENTLY and chose Plugs Biden as his running mate (obviously lack of brain cells made that call).

Still think that Clinton not only INHALED, he smoked the whole bag and had to run to McD's cause he got the munchies.

This makes no sense. According to the data their government collects, per capita use of marijuana has gone down in the UK since they downgraded it to a Class C drug. A recent study they did there concluded that the average potency of seized marijuana in the UK has also gone down since they downgraded it to a Class C drug. Gordon Brown had his Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs review all the evidence and they recommended that marijuana remain a Class C drug, but it looks like they are going to go ahead and put it in the worse category anyway. They just can't leave well enough alone.

If it was legal what would they direct their drug induced feelings of paranoia at? Would the paranoia go away?
