The DBM is taking pot shots at Alaska.

It might be useful to have a thread that discusses Gov. Palin's State.

Gov Palin refers to regions of her state by name.

I know it is a good place to get sea food, get billions of barrels of oil, hunt moose and bear, and get frost bite if you are not careful!!!

Amaze your liberal friends with your knowledge of a beautiful state which they are currently obligated to disdain.

Wasilla, Alaska [wikipedia]

Wasilla [is] the fourth largest population center in Alaska, after Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau

Wasilla was named after a respected local Dena'ina Indian, Chief Wasilla, whose name was derived from the Russian name "Vasili."

Was up there the summer of 2007 for business... Oil ..., grin....and loved it.

Have since gone back up this summer for a 2 wk vacation spin, Seward to Denali and plan to go back next year to explore the points north.

Not that I would live there year-round, Texas-based mind you, but am looking to buy a couple hundred acres north of Denali.

Great vistas, great fishing, great people.....

get frost bite if you are not careful!!!

Most folks live in the southern portion of Alaska. The pacific keeps things fairly temperate. They do get a lot of rain (the rainfall in Ketchican is measured in feet) and snow in the winter, but along the coast much of the snow is melted on a daily basis. Inland and to the north, it can be ungodly cold.

The people are very friendly. While visiting Juneau, I was in a car with my cousin who lives there, and in the downtown area, in the middle of an intersection, two cars stopped so that the drivers could talk to each other. Yes, there was traffic that was blocked, but not a single person honked their horn. Unbelievable.

Plenty of sun in the spring and summer. Not much in the winter. In the winter, going to the bar is a favorite past time. Alcoholism rates are higher than the lower 48.

People are independent, but also rely on their neighbors and help their neighbors. The scenery is breath taking, but look out for the black flies!

I have to admit that I do not know a lot about Alaska. But, if Sarah Palin is in any way representative of Alaskans, I have come to understand that:

there is a core to these people that speaks of determination,
there is an understanding of America that speaks of patriotism,
there is an earthiness to these people that speaks of genuineness
there is a spirit to these folks that gives me hope for our country.

More from Wikipedia
About 35 percent of the Wasilla workforce commutes to Anchorage.

The local economy is diverse, and residents are employed in a variety of city, borough, state, federal, retail and professional service positions.

Tourism, agriculture, wood products, steel, and concrete products are part of the economy.

One hundred and twenty area residents hold commercial fishing permits.

Wasilla is home to the Iditarod Trail Committee.
