Things are so-so here. I seem to be recovering a bit but LoM is a bit worse.
Yes.
Federal elections, Provincial elections, City elections, (we don’t get to elect dog catchers, or Judges), all happen as separate entities.
They handed me a paper ballot with 4 names, each with a white circle beside the names.
I marked an X in the box beside one name, and handed it back to the worker.
She ripped the numbered tag off the edge, and gave my ballot back to me so I could put it in the box.
Are you showing this to your kids?
I haven’t really thought about this before.
How foreign it must seem to you.
I know. Too much opportunity for fraud. (Lurkers....See Acorn)
Did you get medicine?
Medicine? LoM picked up some cough syrup. Same ingredients, different brand -- doesn't work as well (for me).
Look at this, and previous stuff....is it just moi?
Or am I getting in the way of the "Canada" expert?
;-)
Revise that. A close check reveals that the second is lacking the anti-cough ingredient. We now have a bottle of the first.
(How the election works in Canada.)
I’m somewhat familiar with the Parliamentary election system, because I read Margaret Thatcher’s memoirs. It is foreign to just wipe out the equivalent of the House of Representatives, though.
What do you mean?
Don’t all your members of Parliament have to stand for reelection at this point?
Yes.
All who choose to run again.
Each riding has at least 4 people trying for the job.
In Quebec, there can be 5, because they also have the Bloq Quecbecois party to vote for.
Hello!
Am I interrupting something politically important?
Educational.
Ah. May I sit in, then?
Way back when it was invented by The Founders, the only folks who were elected by a direct vote of “We, The People” were members of The House of Representatives.
U.S. Senators were selected by the States.
Presidents were selected by a vote of the Electors of the States, and the Electors were selected by the States.
A “Presidential Campaign” consisted of a breif season of going from State to State and making direct appeals to the electors of each State.
“Democracy” was a vile epithet ranking somewhere between “S#!+” and “F@#$”, and pretty much everyone in the newly-forged Federal government understood that, because the government had been set up just so, the structure of it was NOT to be trifled with.
The Executive Branch was not directly beholden to the people, but to the States, which makes great sense, since it was the States who sent their delegates to the Constitutional Convention to begin with, and it was the States that ratified said Constitution.
With the Senate being a State-elected body, and the house being elected by popular votes in local districts, there was a set balance in the Legislative Branch between the direct interests of the poeple, and the interests of the several States.
The Judicial Branch was intended to be the weakest of all, appointed by The President, confirmed by The Senate (representing the States), and accountable to Congress on pain of impeachment.
We’ve destroyed all that, now, as we’ve continually folded, spinled , and mutilated the system to make it function as exactly what the founders most feared: direct democracy.
As in the last two elections, you may fully expect that post-election spin will — yet again — target that last remaining vestige of The Founders’ wisdom: The Electoral College.
The Republic founded under The Constitution has been set off its foundations for nearly 100 years, but we Conservatives have managed to hold it together up to the present time. Perhaps The Divine might deign to intervene with another Great Revival that would return men en masse to moral decision-making, and thus re-establish the Repulic on its original footings. Barring that, however, I fear that a great deal of American blood will again be shed on this soil to prevent the final demolition of this once-great Republic.
In the meaintime, enjoy your quasi-democratic oligarchy.
Not from my point of view.
Just back a bit ago from a run to the emergency clinic -- I could tell LoM has been there before because they know her. And one of the nurses (a Persian) knew she speaks Farsi. Nothing *really* serious, a bad cut on a finger fixed with a a few stitches, but one of the joys in living where we do is that the nearest clinic is a dozen or more miles away, the far side of Redmond.
Really nice autumn day out there, it's just too bad neither of us are quite well enough to fully enjoy it. And when I get back from the impending LV & Vienna trips, it will be all gone.
Been studying the bus routes & schedules you sent. (Thanks!) Looks like a piece of cake: the 108 (or was it 109?) from the airport to the south transit center, then a short ride up to the hotel -- which is so close I could probably walk it faster but I'm sure they'd get upset if I started crossing the main runways... No mention of transfers in the book -- if not, it might be cheaper to take a taxi... no, just looked up the rates and it wouldn't be.
Bad news. I took a look at the calendar on the cellphone when at the clinic. I have a speaking engagement *tomorrow* at noon -- a practice session in the office for my talk in LV next week. Not my first practice run, and I'd made that clear, but a number of folks who attended the previous one signed up again!
Not too far wrong. Actually, that's the way I explain our two political parties:
Republicans want everyone to become rich.I'd rather be the only poor man in a town full of rich folks, than the only rich man in a town full of poor people.
Democrats want everyone to become poor.
By the way, welcome to the Undead Thread!
Thanks for posting that H.
I am on edge for our election tonight, so I will consider and learn from this, in the morning.
:-)
Probably 108. The 109 goes up Maryland Parkway, which is WAY beyond where you want to go. You want to connect with anything that goes to the Strip.
Since I don’t have a schedule here, I’ll have to wait til Saturday to give you suggestions.
Good luck! Either way, the Undead Thread will be here tomorrow.
Thanks TC.
That is the BEST news.
Have a good night.
