Might purchase a Smith & Wesson M&P 45 ACP
today | me

Posted on 09/08/2008 6:52:43 PM PDT by Grizzled Bear

My wife and I went gun shopping recently. I'm considering a Smith and Wesson MP 45. It will be my Birthday/Anniversary/Christmas present (although I'm hoping for a few boxes of ammo in my stocking).

I'm cautious about weapons that include plastic in their construction. Does anyone here have any practical, long term, experience with this model?

9mm is not a real “stopper”

.45acp will stop them

The Germans in WWII loved the 45acp - they manufactured them - some in Norway I believe

Lots of great ammo choices too

A wheelgun is more reliable if a problem occurs

Simply use the next chamber

2 quick large caliber shots to the upper mass is the key

A pistol requires clearing the chamber

Time can kill you

Before you can clear a jammed or damaged cartridge case in a pistol I have already reloaded 6 more .44-40s and fired them

Learn to be firing as soon as you clear leather as you raise your iron

Waiting to see the sights can be fatal

I’ve been thinking about a S&W 357 for the versatility of firing 38 shells. Right now my weapons include my Remington 12g Super Magnum Express and what ever they issue me at the Armory window...

so I will start with: Get a Springfield XD.

I concur.

Mine has functioned flawlessly with whatever I've fed it.

If you have minimal resources for home security I would suggest a 4 inch S&W 686 as your ladies can use it as well as you. Like it or not some ladies and even some men or elderly can not operate a slide on a semi auto. A wheel gun is a very basic good handgun for the home for self defense IMO and experience. With a CHL (permit) this can be carried when out and about easily with a IWB thumbreak holster as well.

Were I issuing guns to evey home in America I would issue the following as a basic set of personal defense / security and foraging tools.

Pump Shotgun
Scoped Bolt Action Rifle in .308 or 30-06
2 x 38/357 revolvers
A Scoped small bolt action or 10-22 style semi auto .22 rimfire for small game and knee capping rioters or looters.

just my opinion of course.......:o)

You still active duty ?

For at least two more years. I want to finish my degree and get into the "Troops to Teachers" program.

I like your list. At some point I'll get a big revolver.

.

2 revolvers

.357 is OK

Bigger is better

For a woman a .357 is OK - .38 for practice

Always think of ear protection for practice - many later will agree -like my older brother who carries a Ruger .357

I’ve seen local LEOs carry a 40 pistol and a .357 revolver as backup

Nice iron I told them

But 2 in matched calibers are simpler and could save your life

I’m fortunate in that I can draw and have good accuracy with both hands - and at the same time

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

KEEP YOUR BACK TO THE WALL

S&W is a 2nd Sell Out, not buying them.

Glock 23C or Sig 229. The sig 229 is costy but what is your life worth? My 229 has never failed, ever. I shoot good ammo through it and keep it clean. The Glock 23C is the compinsated version and I love it for follow up shots. It is quick!!! The Glock has stove-piped on me twice in 5K rounds. For the house I keep a 12 gage 870 riot gun/extended mag stoked with buckshot. When you work the slide the sound is unmistakable and will stop about anyone dead in their tracks.

Too late.

They were sold and the new owners rejected the agreement.

Boycott of S&W, I don’t believe it was ever called off.

I may have missed what they have done to redeem themselves.

Advice? you’ll get plenty so I will start with: Get a Springfield XD. One hole gun out of the box. 14 rounds of .45ACP in your hand.

I'll second the motion. XD-45 is an awesome pistol. As for plastic, I have the XD-45, a Glock 23 and a HK USP Compact 40...all outstanding pistols.

Don’t know about that. That came scheme came recently. I thought I read Kimber was working on that, not sure, so who knows. For now buy what works for you.
