Wisconsin woman, 20, arrested for two overdue library volumes

AUGUST 21--The next time you forget to return a couple of library books (and ignore those annoying letters about the overdue status of said volumes), think of Heidi Dalibor. The Wisconsin woman, 20, was arrested earlier this month in connection with a pair of books overdue for several months. Dalibor, who made the mistake of ignoring a court citation issued after she failed to respond to letters and phone calls from the Grafton library, was busted August 6 for failing to return copies of Janet Fitch's best-seller "White Oleander" (a 1999 Oprah Book Club selection) and "Angels & Demons," author Dan Brown's precursor to "The Da Vinci Code." According to a police report, Dalibor was apprehended at her family's home, cuffed and stuffed in a cruiser, and booked for violating the "overdue library materials" ordinance. She also had to pose for the below mug shot at the Grafton Police Department. Dalibor subsequently settled with the library by paying her overdue fines and reimbursing it for the cost of the two novels, which totaled around $180. Dalibor's mother Patty told TSG that her daughter was "a good kid" who works two jobs. She is also now the owner of the Fitch and Brown books, which Dalibor got to keep as a result of paying off her library levies

Of course, I still find this speech to be jolly brilliant:

BOOKMAN: Well, let me tell you something, funny boy. Y’know that little stamp, the one that says “New York Public Library”? Well that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole hell of a lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I’ve seen your type before: Flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. What’s this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Well, let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me. Maybe. Sure, we’re too old to change the world, but what about that kid, sitting down, opening a book, right now, in a branch at the local library and finding drawings of pee-pees and wee-wees on the Cat in the Hat and the Five Chinese Brothers? Doesn’t HE deserve better? Look. If you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you’d better think again. This is about that kid’s right to read a book without getting his mind warped! Or: maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld; maybe that’s how y’get your kicks. You and your good-time buddies. Well I got a flash for ya, joy-boy: Party time is over. Y’got seven days, Seinfeld. That is one week!

I see we need to PING some regular fans of Hairy Potty, Dan Brown, Stephen "Penny Dreadfuls" King and Tom Schmancy to defend this fine girl's literary taste. "Taste"?

I know your post is a joke, but is it really true that you have never paid a library fine for a late book? You’re kiddin’, right? That isn’t human. You obviously have no children.

I am a VERY organized single homeschooling mother of four. I could go on a weekend vacation on what I’ve paid out in library fines in my lifetime.

Well this is no joking matter... For a third offense, life in prison without parole and no library privileges at the prison either.

That ought to teach them.

Try the decaffeinated, and if you really really just have to read a book there is always Amazon.com.

Her eyes are uneven as well, in a Shannen Doherty way. Her left eye is higher than her right.

Very disconcerting, and don’t think she’s hot either. At least not in that picture.

From the article:

Dalibor, who made the mistake of ignoring a court citation issued after she failed to respond to letters and phone calls from the Grafton library,...

I'm with you. Sounds like she had plenty of chances.

Study her picture, do you seriously think this woman had any real intentions of reading anything more than a McDonald’s menu; had I been behind the bench she’d be under the jail.

I understand about Amazon.com but the fact is that I shouldn't have to purchase a book if I can read it for free at the library. I mean, I don't mind paying for books that I read more than once and in fact I have a large personal library of "classics" in my home that I purchased brand new from bookstores and websites like Amazon.com.

But what about books that are worth reading but not worth paying for because you likely will just skim through them and never read again? Like for instance the library book I am reading now about NASA and the conspiracy theories about how they are supposedly covering up evidence of life throughout the solar system? It took me months to finally get that book because some nimrod stuck it under his bed and forgot about it for some period of time.

Anyway, I'm sure that the "face" on Mars is just a trick of light.

Is it me or is it hilarious that the other 2 people on the incident report (go to the link) have these last names:

Sinner (her overdue book is running with scizzors - lol)
Pipkorn (his is a CD called Jailbreak)

LMAO!

You do not understand. Those books belong to the citizens of Grafton. Ms. Dalibor took them. She was given the opportunity to return them, and she did not.

I have a 20 year old library fine that still prohibits me from getting a library card.

I got around my lack of a library card. I took each one of my kids to the library to get their card... then promptly confiscated it for my own use until the day they demanded it back. Then I would take the next youngest child.

I forget the reason for not paying the fine. I remember I was right and they were wrong. Other than that, I have forgetten the details.

This is overkill for the court system. Even with the claim of “public property”. Call a credit bureau. The only reason crap like this is happening is because real crime is going down and we have overstaffed our police from 9/11.
