Past Climate Change: Continental Stretching Preceding Opening Of The Drake Passage

...age estimates for the onset of a seaway through the Drake Passage range from middle Eocene to early Miocene, complicating interpretations of the relationship between ocean circulation and global cooling.

Studying the southeast tip of Tierra del Fuego, a region that was once attached to the Antarctic Peninsula, Ghiglione et al. discovered evidence for the opening of widespread early Eocene extensional depocenters. The succession of events described in their study show that the opening of a seaway through the Drake Passage was early enough to contribute to global cooling through lowering levels of atmospheric CO2.

Their data bolster interpretations of an early (Eocene) marine gateway by confirming the prediction of a continental extensional regime in the region during the period prior to the opening of small basins ca. 42 million years ago. Ghiglione et al.'s findings will have a broad impact, adding key pieces to the puzzle of the opening of the Drake Passage, and allowing a new field of investigation to continue unveiling its effects on global circulation and climate.

Of course it is “Bush’s fault”!

Here is a link to a NASA animation of the opening of the Atlantic due to Continental Drift which has the northern land masses traveling in south bound track towards the equator.

Can we stop this natural progression that will result in global warming by reducing our carbon footprint?

NO!

Yes, most of the article just existed to harp on the global warming myths.

It could happen -— I saw a movie where it happened so it must be true. </tounge in cheek>

Waterworld: In a future where the polar ice caps have melted and most of Earth is underwater, a mutated mariner fights starvation and outlaw “smokers,” and reluctantly helps a woman and a young girl find dry land.

Hey, it was a subtle plot — the villains used jetskis and were headquartered on an oil tanker...

"Their data bolster interpretations of an early (Eocene) marine gateway by confirming the prediction of a continental extensional regime in the region during the period prior to the opening of small basins ca. 42 million years ago."

Do I understand this -- 42 million years ago, Drake's Passage began to open up south of the Tiera del Fuegos?

This allowed oceans of the "roaring 40s" to careen all around Antarctica, thus blocking off heat from the north, causing the Antarctic to freeze over -- the beginning of "global cooling," aka "ice ages"?

Let's see, there must be a political angle here somewhere... ;-)

Oh yes...
The new ice ages prevented the return of dinosaur Republicans, and fostered the growth of Neanderthal Democrats, who were better adapted for cold weather.

But today, finally, dinosaurs, lead by Tyrannosaurus Bush, have sneaked back in and are trying to warm up the place, thus endangering numerous subspecies of Neanderthalis Democratus, especially the barking Goridon, who because of their huge body size hate heat and want as much ice around as possible.

What do you think? Is that about right? ;-)

Science Daily, huh? Are there any science journals that stll do actual science as opposed to politically correct pap du jour? Serious question.

It does look like today’s science is under the same sort of ideological assault that turned science into a tool of propaganda during the nazi daze in Germany.

But many different sources now have confirmed that temperature change precedes CO2 changes and probably causes them.
