Study explores plausibility of bulbs and tubers in the diet of early human ancestors

Anthropologist Nathaniel J. Dominy of the University of California, Santa Cruz, has advanced the investigation of the diet of early human ancestors by painstakingly measuring the mechanical properties of the underground parts of nearly 100 plant species across sub-Saharan Africa... in Dominy's exploration of the hypothesis that our earliest ancestors may have eaten a diet rich in plants, specifically their carbohydrate-rich underground storage organs... Dominy's new study, published in the journal Evolutionary Biology, also adds unexpected insights, because his analysis suggests that different hominin species relied to varying degrees on USOs... humans are uniquely adapted to digest starch... USOs leave the same chemical signature on tooth enamel as grass does.

Roasting tubers, such as the watermelon-sized specimens in this photo of Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, enhances their digestibility, according to anthropologist Nate Dominy. Photo by N. Dominy.

USO?!? There wasn’t even an American Army back then, so how could there be any USOs? And I never found the USO to be starchy; just their security teams were starchy. Is this prof saying they were cannibals, and ate American troop entertainers? /s>

How about something like:

If they could get their teeth on it, they ate it. If it didn’t kill (or make them wish it had killed) them, they continued to eat it.

Besides USOs, they most likely also ate CMUs, (Carrion Meat Units) AGVOs, (Above Ground Vegetative Organs) UWMTs (Under Water Moving Thinggies), and ATETDETFs (Any Thing Else That Didn’t Eat Them First).

TANSTAAFL

I am so lucky that as a sophomore some 40+ years ago I could see how political & PC Anthro already was,-—and gettng worse-—so changed my major.

The psychology behind this research is an attempt to “prove” that ancient humans lived mainly off the foods gathered by the women rather than those hunted down by the men.

In essence, it’s a projection into the far past of the ongoing effort to marginalize males in our own society.

I wish they wouldn’t substitute “humans” for hominins. Just a bit of propaganda. Pretty soon anything will be human.

Bears and wild pigs eat tubers and roots - and they’re tough guys. Don’t worry about it.

Don’t sweat it. It’s just an ad hominem argument meant to appeal to the baser sort of knuckle drag liberals.
It does remind me of the time I cut up one of my wife’s bulbs and stuck it in my roast beef sandwich.
It DID look like an onion. But it shore didn’t taste like no onion.

Its amazing you are still here!
Many of the flowering bulbs are quite poisonous !
I remember reading a book back in high school or jr high called “Daffodils are Dangerous”, it was about all the poisonous (if you ingest!) plants we have in flower gardens.

So THAT’s my problem. Sure explains a lot. I bet the coffee in extreme doses helped keep the poison at bay.
