Years ago in high schol I was listening to the Duprees singing You Belong To Me on NYC’s WABC. My dad, no fan of WABC Rock asked me who was singing Jo Stafford’s song. I didn’t have a clue who she was. He commented that I needed better taste in music. Years later I happened to hear her doing You Belong To Me on WNEW AM NYC’s standards outlet. I was blown away. Luckily my dad was still with us and I got to tell him that like most other things he was right about music. I’ve got her on a CD.Think I’ll put it on and listen. RIP Jo.

All my favorite female voices are passing...... Ella Fitzgerald, Karen Carpenter, Dusty Springfield ..... now Jo Stafford.

(And I'm only in my early 40s -- I just have learned that the "talent" nowadays rarely compares to the classics.)

I like Jo, but the Duprees version of "You Belong to Me" is still the best:

OMG! “I'll Be Seeing You” — I can hear her sing it now. Still makes me well up. “Appleblossom Time” — I can hear that, too. She had a beautiful voice. I don't have any of her recordings, but still have Patsy Klein, Skeeter Davis. Stafford's voice was just like Karen Carpenter's — simple, elegant, tonally perfect, yet unrecognized for the talent it was. Stafford was a “hot” chick for the times she came from. Those hair-dos, I swear, my mom and every one of her sisters had one just like it. ;-) Sweet memories.

I grew upn listening to her. She was one of my father’s favorites. He had an LP of Scottish Ballads sung by her, great stuff. I think he bought it when he lived in England.

Her ability to change her voice and become "Darlene Edwards" endeared her to my funny bone ages ago. Her take on "I love Paris in the Springtime" is a classic. Incredible talent. The poor girls who pass for pop singers today couldn't do what she did at that age...

My grandmother used to sing her songs as she did her house work. Farewell gracious Lady, and we’ll hear you on the other side. :)

My favorite Jo Stafford Pied Pipers song was “Whatcha Know Joe?”

Ohhhh Whatcha Know Joe)
I Don’t Know nothin’
(Whatcha Know Joe)
tell me somethin’
(Whatcha Know Joe)
Ain’t connivin’
Just aint jivin’
I don’t know

(Whatcha know Joe)
Well i don’t know Latin
(Whatcha know Joe)
Ain’t high-hattin’
(Whatcha Know Joe)
I aint foolin’
i need schoolin’
i don’t know

i don’t know
mama tried to tell me so
papa wouldn’t let me go
couldn’t even see a movie show

(sooooo whatcha know Joe)
i just cant figure
(whatcha know Joe)
i don’t dig ya
(whatcha know Joe)
hey stop your squakin,
just ant talkin
cuz i don’t know

(whatcha know Joe)
(oobie doobie do)
(Whatcha know Joe)
(oobie doobie do)
(what do you know Joe)

just aint makin it
i don’t know

i don’t know
my mama tried to tell me so
papa wouldn’t let me go
couldn’t even see a movie show

(oobie doobie do)
(whatcha know Joe)
i just cant figure
(whatcha know Joe)
i don’t dig ya
(whatcha know Joe)
quit your squakin,
i ant talkin
cuz i don’t know

So sad to see this news! Jo Stafford is my very favorite singer. Her recordings are out of this world! Such an incredible talent. Rest in peace, dear Jo. Thank you for all of the music.
