I have definitely seen quite a few gas stations that have closed up in the past year but WHY no gas lines yet?

I know of at least half-a-dozen corners here in Tampa where gas stations have been torn down and banks have been or are being built. What’s wrong with this picture?

When there is no artificial cap on gas prices, you can get as much gas as you like.....you just pay the market price. There is no shortage of expensive gasoline.....why would there be lines at the pump?????

Because there are no price controls.

There weren't any in the 70's until price controls.

Gas lines are caused by government rationing, such as we experienced under President Jimmy Carter. Bush has made lots of mistakes, but nothing that stupid.

The free market will give you a take-it-or-leave-it price, but no long lines.

Occasionally you might see a line at a station that is offering a low price as a promotion. Personally, I’d rather pay slightly more and not wait.

Suppy, meet demand.

As Milton Friedman was pleased to remind us, economists only know how to make two things: shortages and surpluses. If you want a surplus control the price above the market price (milk) if you want a shortage, below( gasoline in 1973).

The reason we do not have gas lines is because we have free markets. You pay market price. If the oil companies drop the price of gas say a dollar with the same amount of supply you would see long lines and gas stations with no gas within a week.

What will happen, and may've already happened is this:

Some station owner will not have the money to pay for his gas, and will close his pumps. Then a rumor will start about "no gas", and the panic will begin.

We had lines a mile long on the afternoon of 9-11, for no other reason than a bunch of mindless speculation by irresponsible media. Which is most of it.

The 1973 gas rationing was caused by the Arab OPEC countries placing an embargo on oil exports to certain countries.

Isn’t the percentage to the credit card company the same regardless of the amount of the charge, or, do we have factual data that a higher percentage of sales are now credit instead of cash. I’ve been using credit long before the run-up in price.

The gas line don’t start until price controls are imposed by the government. Right now there are plenty of people willing to pay the price, so although gas prices are high, supply is not lagging demand.

Once price controls are implemented by the government, since the price can no longer rise, shortages will be the inevitable result.

There are no lines because there is no shortage of gas, especially at $4 a gallon. They’ll make all the gas you can buy if you’ll pay $4/gallon for it. There will be even more gas at $5 a gallon. No lines. No worries

IMO there is NO shortage of anything except hedge fund manipulation by NASDAQ sorts ! I remember the even / odd days , the lines , the attendants at stations with 12 ga shotguns and a limit of how much fuel we could get !

I keep my rides fueled up and garaged except when at work . Each vehicle has bed tanks or aux fuel cells and aftermarket OEM tanks that are as large as will fit and function for the vehicle.

The lines are possible as is rationing yet I still personally believe this is not a oil shortage it is speculator’s hedge fund efforts driving the costs .

Just my opinion vs anything based on fact.......:o)

Stay safe !

Thought this might be about the Alaska natural gas pipeline. But, who cares about a $30 billion project that will eat ALL the steel America can produce in a year [if an American steel company actually gets the award.

I've seen some very long lines here, especially at the Admiral stations. They have run as much as ten cents less per gallon and are almost always the cheapest show in town.

AND they have tiny lots.

WHY no gas lines yet?

Could it be because Obama isn't president yet?
