I have a weather radio and it's worth every dime! (30 bucks at evil Walmart.)Although it still scares the crap out of me when it goes off at 2 a.m.-and it's been doing that a lot lately! And I bought it with my own money! Gosh, what a concept!
Snort.
Kit Bond and all of his “individual responsibility” buddies will be taken care of for good, once Obama is elected Chancellor.... I mean President.
Thank goodness someone out there still has some sense.
A Ministry of the Nanny State should be formed and funded with however much money it takes to help these poor weather-radio-deprived people.
Maybe we can even have a telethon on PBS.
Many people wouldn’t use them or turn them on. They would not buy batteries for the damned things.
Then the government, in its infinite wisdom would decree that the radios turn on automatically when the government presses a button, and would issue vouchers for batteries for families earning under a certain amount.
Here in Houston, we USED to hear the air raid sirens once a month (testing). They were also to be used to warning of impending tornados/hurricanes. They were silenced in the 1990s.
There are other solutions besides handing out something to every voter.
And then there will be the total idiots who lose, destroy or can’t operate the radios - so the Gov’t will have to provide someone to operate the radios for them.
Yeah, I really want to head down the road of government mandated radios for receiving their approved channels (”citizens, the Ministry of Love has an important message...”). Not long after, it will be “hey, since we have these radios in every home, why don’t we add functionality for...” No thanks. Least of all on taxpayer dime.
Too much government butt-wiping already. This isn’t elementary school art class, there are no A’s for effort or good intentions. All fecal sculptures receive an F, regardless of size, quality, or accompanying 1500 word essay.
Weather radios are nice if you can receive the broadcast. In most parts of the county where I live weather radio doesn’t work for the simple reason there’s no local weather transmitter. I wouldn’t mind the government coughing up the $25,000 that one costs.
The kicker is that cable TV in the rural areas isn’t real reliable either. So much for the weather channel.
I’m sure Kit Bond will be pilloried for this callous and “old school” thinking about individual responsibility.
And then the Dems will probably say: “Why should we only provide weather radios for our own citizens... what about the poor people in Miramar/Burma? We really are callous and uncaring thinking only about ourselves... Weather radios for everyone!”
If the poorest America has, can talk on cell phones as they use their lone star card...they can afford to by their own radio.
The most frustrating thing about a weather radio is living close enough to an ocean to get marine advisories. There's nothing like being wakened at three in the morning to be told to get my boat to safe harbor.
Bill
Let me get this straight. This means I’m not going to get a free pony?
