Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Sounds like I’ll be tired on a lot of weekends.
Help! Which Founding Father said something to the effect, "this day is to be celebrated with the discharge of fireworks and guns"? I decided the first fire with my M1A would be auspicious today. And it was, in more ways than one. Details later.
Ruh, roh, that sounds ominous!
John Adams.
A minor issue with the quick-detach front sling swivel. It's so quick, the button just touched my shoulder as I slung the rifle, and it fell onto a concrete driveway. The rifle and sight came through like a trooper, although I wailed and gnashed my teeth at the cosmetic scratches on the Aimpoint.
Scrape away the embedded concrete, a bit of file touch-up, and some aluminum blackener. The sight and rifle still functioned properly (but not quite flawlessly), after that. BTW, I'm going to eliminate every push-button swivel I own. Anybody interested in risking their weapons for free?
Other than that, I had a few failures-to-feed, with the bolt riding over the round in the magazine. I need to check how freely the follower is moving, and mark this mag for further study.
Firing it, with ear protection, is pure joy. Horrendous muzzle blast, moderate recoil, and almost no muzzle rise. It was like firing a 12ga shotgun with field loads. Of course, this is a bit heavier than your average shotgun. Very pleasant shooting, aside from muzzle blast.
Besides an auspicious day for firing the M1A for the first time, this was the first time my nephew fired anything bigger than 9mm or 5.7x28. The rifle treated him quite well. He can now say he's fired something in a manly man's caliber.
There was no attempt to sight anything in, just an earlier check with a collimator to make sure things were pointing in the right direction. We had no trouble hitting an aluminum transmission case at 50 yards, offhand. You could see the metal spark when the round hit. Do not try to take cover behind an aluminum casting if someone is shooting 7.62mm NATO at you.
Thank you.
I think John Adams would approve of an American rifle, Swedish sight, and Belgian ammo for this function.
Ouch ! That is bad ! Sorry ya scratched that personal rifle !
I know I even treated my issued working guns like they were my own as my life depended on em at times . I have a few of the QD swivel’s yet they have a knurled knob screw in versus just a push button.
My SOCOM II has no sling as I would bleed too death if I slung that cheese grater but my SOCOM 16 has a Turner leather sling.
Enjoy your Independence Day Sir !
I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826. Sort of fitting that Jesse Helms died on the same day almost 200 years later.
As for Helms' early social views, the way I see it is that he was a product of his time and his state and that many, many people (north and south) had to realize how wrong their attitudes were. More power to people like Helms who realized the errors of their earlier thinking.
Of course, since he was a Republican, he couldn't be forgiven for that, unlike a former Grand Kleagle who is known as the "Conscience of the Senate."

We went out to look at new monitors this morning. Interestingly, both places we looked (Best Buy and Circuit City) had only widescreen monitors in stock, no 4:3 19” monitors at all. I didn’t realize widescreens were becoming the standard.
We didn’t make a purchase yet, because we want to check Costco too, and they were closed today. At least with our setup, it’s easy to switch Hair’s monitor between computers and take turns. :)
And worked to rectify the situations in many ways!
BTW, I still have some brats we could throw on the grill if you guys wanted. Or maybe Sunday, when it’s not as likely there will be fireworks going on.
I still need to get buns anyhow. Meant to stop on the way home from work today, and I didn’t. I rather like mine nekkid, but I’m weird that way.
I still have to go to *town* at some point. *sigh* Gotta get stuff to make something for the cook-out / potluck tomorrow. Maybe I’ll go tonight when everyone else is off doing fireworks...
BTW, on the monitor...you might also check office supply type places, I dunno. Not that their prices are as good, but they might be more likely to carry standard ratio monitors.
Actually, we have some steaks and corn on the cob for tonight, if you want to come over for that. Then we can do the brats on Sunday?
It’s not that I’m fixed on getting a standard ratio monitor, I was just surprised to see not a one in the stores. I’ve actually gotten a bit used to using a widescreen at work. It’s pretty nice for programs like Dreamweaver and Photoshop that have lots of sidebars.
Evening Winmag; well, think of it as a adding a bit of character to the rifle. note to self - don’t hide behind aluminum things. Glad it all worked out and .308 was what you hoped it would be.
btw - I’m still eyeing a sig for my ebr. My buddy/gunpusher has some now. Unfortunately he takes July off, so I haven’t been able to heft one yet.
Ooh...I could do that! I think I'd be getting by far the better end of the deal....
Otay... we’re hungry, so we’re starting it up now. :)
Cool...I’ll head over pretty quick...is the fish pond safe? ;-)
We’ll go make it safe!
DOH!!!
Do not try to take cover behind an aluminum casting if someone is shooting 7.62mm NATO at you.
heh heh... no kiddin'...
In Dogwood Ridge Range News, put the first fiddy rounds thru the SIG... mrsnad and theboy took part... functioned flawlessly... 855 Ball made a melody on the tank engine cover...
Evening Corin - G’nad: the sig functioning perfectly is music to my ears, as would be the melody of the 855 on the tank hatch.
Corin - Friend of mine at werk lent me the John Adams cd set. We started it and it’s quite well done. Gypsy needed a walk and we needed coffee for in the morning so..killed two birds with one stone and walked up the store. Now the rest of disc 1.
OT: LSA has been staining and I’ve been sanding today, the ribs and spuds were just the ticket. now relaxing mode and listen to music of the fireworks, glad we have the subtitles on John Adams, the noise levels gets right up there with Shootmoot.
Did you see Junior?
