My column last weekend, "What I'd do as president," received more responses than any other column I've written to date. In that piece, I believe I struck a poignant chord with the American people, as well as with people as far away as Brazil, China, Israel, Africa, Australia and other lands. Therefore, I will continue this theme and apply it to Detroit, the city of my birth.
What would I do if I were mayor of Detroit?

The first thing I would do is move.
How can we draft this guy.
I’ve long maintained what Detroit needs is someone who will come in and be the best one term mayor this town has ever seen.
After the innaugural, Mayor Washington should immediately fire all city employees except police, fire and his staff. Then each week, another department will begin rehiring the few competent employees and filling the ranks with new employees who will actually work.
Then, go to work on teh Police and Fire Departments. Joe Arpeio would make a good chief.
Then, find the worst neighborhood in the city and move all the tenants out. Should be easy since very very few actually own the place they stay. Tear it down. Cap off the sewer and gas lines and tear them out, tear out the streets. If the land cannot be sold for development, lease it out as farmland and grow corn.
After that, move on to the next neighborhood and do it again. Eventually, developers will build apartments and homes that will be sold to former welfare rats who by this time will have gotten jobs and be able to afford a home.
Gee, Detroit and some other cities have become such hell holes, are they worth saving? Can we save them or revive them?
Some of the cities which are in the worst conditions have been governed by liberal Democrats for generations. If liberalism were truly the path to utopia in our society, cities like Detroit would be in much better shape than they are. They would have world class school systems, would not have slums, would not have such crime problems, and would not have such severe social problems. If liberal solutions to problems were the best approach, the subject of the inner cities wouldn’t continually be a major concern of our society.
I wish more people could see that. The Left got a hold of Russia. How did that turn out? The Left got a hold of Cuba. Big success? The Left has Newark, Philadelphia, Detroit. Best cities in the country?
Gee, maybe the solutions of the Left are not such good solutions after all.
You start with ‘broken window’ law enforcement.
That includes removal of corrupt city and county officials.
Once you get rid of the crime (read, the people committing the crime), the other problems take care of themselves.
I’m for the Tobacco Road doctrine: blow it up and start over again.
