One other aspect on the football contract, in cities where there are bad home teams people still tune in to watch marque match ups. As much as people want to complain about the Patriots they pulled in huge ratings for the league. That translates into ad dollars and more money for the rest of the league.

My only reservation is that he played in the Big Ten.

What the heck is the matter with the Big Ten? - aside from the fact that it has 11 teams, so it can't count.

LoL, you caught me. I was just trying to throw out some humor there. Nothing against the big 11 here. Good catch.

Useless teams existed. In the 1890s there were horrifically bad teams in baseball major league. This was before we worked out the right way to run a league. There were teams so bad that they didn't play home games - there was no way to get home town fans excited about their team, it was that bad. It was a matter of league rules, and when adjusted, you had a better overall field of play.

Baseball now is inching toward ugly problems. Football has it right. Look at Pittsburgh. With revenue sharing, salary caps and all - the Steelers have a reason to fall in love with Big Ben. The Jets aren't goping to easily steal him away. But hell - what's the point of a Pirates fan committing a fan crush to Freddy Sanchez? They Yankees will take him away once they feel like it. That's not healthy.

It's not like dry cleaning. Mr. Jefferson would have been damn happy to move on up to the greatest dry cleaner in all of The Empire State. Drive all the losers outta business. But if Steinbrenner makes small market teams a de facto farm system, that is not good for the game. There has to be some type of concern for the greater good - of the league. That's all I mean.

Please understand that Big 11 people take their football seriously, and have been doing so longer than any other college football fans in the country!

Did you see the NFL Network show on top 10 draft steals. Number 8 was Gay Guy. He was great. I hope he can make it into the Hall Of Fame someday.

I have not paid much attention to this but I'm glad the Falcons picked Ryan. I geuss they say there is no other impact QB in this years draft or next years draft. Therefore the Falcons needed to pick a QB. If Ryan plays much at all he won't have too much pressure on him. The Falcons are probably going to be a run oriented team this next year anyways.

QB Flocco is the biggest suprise of the day so far for the Ravens. I just don’t get it. They could have had him in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Puh-leeze. “Useless” teams? I don’t like getting into a baseball discussion on a football thread, but why are you going all the way back to the 1890s, where, BTW, the teams you describe as “useless” either folded or relocated, as should be the remedy. There are always going to be good teams and bad teams in every legitimately competitive sports league or leagues. That’s the inevitable result simply of counting wins and losses. And winners and losers, in baseball, football, or other pro sports, aren’t necessarily determined by the population of the city which they represent.

The only other alternative is to that is to have a centalized entity meddle in and predetermine the outcome and have everyone be forced to win exactly half their games and lose half. That may be extreme, but that’s the only way to completely satisfy the socialist instinct prevelant in some sports management circles. Maybe professional wrestling, where all is fixed, is more your speed.

It's no accident that I had to go way back to the 1890s. Some people have the ability to clue in, and luckily those people were in charge, not your relatives, and that's why that kinda thing doesn't happen anymore.

You'd do better to deflate your Adam Smith blow-up doll and zip up. Actually, do us all a favor and do those things in reverse order. Relax and realize the lesson of the NFL draft, and other leagues (which was the discussion) is that we stray away from pure capitalism for what? In an artificial world of entertainment. You wanna make steel efficiently? Use some of that there capitalism. Want to bring a good quality sport to amuse a wide variety of people? Then you make the league the focus, and make damn sure you don't grow monster teams.

But you have the sound of one of those guys smarter than a century of pro sports, so whatever.

In Sept. 2007 Forbes values the average NFL franchise at over $900 million dollars!!!!

The business is awash in cash and it’s not like baseball where there are 5 teams blowing out the payroll curve.

Yeah, it's true, Gay Guy was an ace in the hole for the Raiders over the years...

If I wasnt to be "amused," I'll go to a comedy club, or theater, or maybe a pro wrestling card, not a legitimate professional sporting event, thank you.

The number one value of sports should be competition, not comedy or amusement (although, granted, there is occasionally spontaneous comedy associated with legit sports, which I have no problem with).

LOL, but don’t forget his contributions as deep snapper on special teams.

Meanwhile the Ravens p/u Ray Rice. Great selection. I think he could very well turn out to be the the most accomplished NFL RB when all is said and done.

It happens every year. My team picks up players I have never heard of before. I will never forget, we got Rothlis-who? Two years later they won a super bowl.

One thing I will say is that the NFL mock drafts are crap save for the fact that they expose fans to players that you may have never heard of before. But they focus so much on the 1st round that you don’t hear much about the second and third rounders that are the steals.

Was there really once a pro football player named “Gay Guy” or is that some kind of a joke - a play on the name “Ray Guy,” who was an excellent punter with the Raiders?

Either the the original poster was punning around or committed a typo. But no, never was a “Gay Guy” in the NFL. So to speak.

...make damn sure you don't grow monster teams.

Well, for all its "making sure," the NFL still had to see the Patriots go 18-0 and lose in the last seconds of the Super Bowl. Maybe they breathed a collective sigh of relief. But I'd still call last year's Pats a "monster" team.
