My sidebar on FR (vanity)
April 20, 2008
Posted on 04/20/2008 7:54:02 AM PDT by processing please hold
When I came on FR this morning my configuration had changed. In order to see my sidebar I have to use the bottom scroll arrow to see it. I went to 'configure sidebar' but to no avail. I also went to my account to tinker with 'my preferences'. There are only three options on it now. (1) Thread Pagination (2) Browsing (3)Windows
None of these are any help in getting back by previous layout.
Any help sure would be appreciated.

That usually is caused by someone posting a long URL in the article Source, rather than in the Source URL.
The long URL causes the page to extend.
Give it a while, and as more posts are made, they will eventually push the long URL post off your current view, and things should return to normal.
[If you click on Next Page, your sidebar will probably be back to its original format.]

Just think how boring it would be to have nothing to gripe about in your life.
Be grateful! :^)You're much too cheerful this early in the morning. I look at the sidebar first thing to see if the world was blown as I slept. Since the sidebar wasn't there.....
I get to sleep late on Sundays and I always have my coffee with FR news. There's no black ink stains on my fingers anymore.

This new format makes FR much less user-friendly.I would have to agree with you. What I find irritating are the vanishing threads and replies.

The font changes have been ridiculous.
If as much time had been spent on creating a functional search capability as changing the formats, it would have been something useful.
Instead, we have to adapt.
I open Latest Articles, individual articles, and My Comments in separate tabs for easy refreshing. Now, they all end up with the same size fonts. I liked the old format with large fonts only on the individual articles. They are too big for the Latest Articles and My Comments pages. But, that is what we are stuck with.
I changed my browser font size, IE Options font size, and WinXP desktop font size 6-8 times each since the changes began a couple weeks ago. Every time I would get it just about acceptible, the fonts formats would all change.
At least, the persistent font resizing seems to have ceased. That played havoc with tabbed browsers.

I also like http://beta.freerepublic.com/perl/pings
When I open my regular FR pages (tabs), Latest Articles and My Comments are huge (compared to the old format).
I open that beta website in exactly the same browser with exactly the same configuration, and the fonts on the beta is so tiny I can hardly read them.
That is the persistent problem many of us are having with the font size changes. They are not consistent.
If I have to readjust my browser to increase the beta fonts to readable sizes, the fonts on the main website (non-beta) become huge.

It’s fixed again. If my hair wasn’t so over dyed I’d be pulling on it. It’s maddening for it to keep jumping around like it is.

I know one thing - as a professional programmer/systems engineer, if I were to change the user interfaces/operational characteristics of the systems I work on without running it by the users first, there’d be hell to pay!
But I don’t work on gui based systems, and don’t have near as many users as FR.

That usually is caused by someone posting a long URL in the article Source, rather than in the Source URL. I'm sure that's it. It's happened before. Maybe the Mighty Admin can track down the offending post.

-now that makes perfect sense. I didn’t spot a huge picture, which will do the same.
