The Hummingbirds are Back

The female was drinking from the Lantana blossoms a couple of days ago. I put up the feeder, the male showed up today. I've had as many as 4 mated pairs around, gets wild when the little ones leave the nests. You only get the bright ruby color with head on shots, I'll change the angle of the feeder.

The other guys never leave!

The hummer is a male, the red throat only shows when the light hits it head on.

We had a female resident who returned for six years, I believe, but successfully nested just her last year. Last year, no resident, just a few migrants. Hummingbirds don’t live forever. But the first birds have hit NJ, and it’s time to hang out the and cross my fingers...

Did you know the hummingbirds who outpace the flowers on the way north will feed at sapsucker holes? I am seriously tempted to get the drill and go up the maple trees - seeing as how sapsuckers are pretty scarce here themselves.

What we have got nesting is a pair of Cooper’s hawks.

I have never been successful with Hummers, but I think I am encouraged and will hang my feeder once again. Hopefully they are thirsty!!??? I live in Northern NJ.

I think my earliest has showed up at the end of April - most years May or even June. They like wooded areas and water so it helps if you have that nearby but I know someone who lives in a highrise near Philly and they fly up to her balcony.

On some forums people talk about a quart of sugar water being slurped up every day - I make two ounces at a time and end up throwing nearly all away. The flowers at least don’t have to be changed.

You didn’t read the text, LOL!

Oh, is he one of "the other guys," the ones that don't leave?

Of course I read the text, stream-of-consciousness as it was.

There is a Sparrow pic and a Cardinal pic, besides the two hummer pics of females.

Thanks. How you got that out of "the text," I'll never know, but I appreciate it.

Got to remember, they eat insects and small spiders, the nectar is just a booster. They need insect protein to feed chicks. If your yard or neighborhood is too well groomed they might just stop for a drink and pass on through. I don’t have that problem here, LOL, this place is wild and buggy!

Beautiful!

Love the Lady Cardinal, and the ever beautiful hummingbird.

You have a gift to be able to “see” things others can’t.

You are an artist, my friend.

Our usuals are all back now, except the Mockingbird who hasn't showed yet

Cardinal, Mourning Dove, BlueJays and House Wrens are here and preparing to nest in our habitat in E. Central Kansas.

Now if only the sun would make an appearance!! It seems like it's been cold, cloudy and dreary since the fall.
