The big calendar stone left by the Mayans only gos up to 2012, whcih has led some nutjobs to claim that the world will end that year.

Sycthian responded before I could. Basically though, the Mayans who were apparently very good at astronomy created a calendar which “runs out” in 2012.

It’s my thinking having been an astronomer for 40 plus years, that they simply quit calculating at that point and it was the last year they felt like working out.

If I recall correctly, their days were not the same as ours, and they didn’t have a 7 day week or anything like that either, so it’s all apples and oranges.

There is some kind of weird alignment of several planets with a gap in the milky way, sort of a dark zone in space. This is supposed to happen on 12/17/2012 and is something that happens only once evry 50,000 years or sime such.

There was a History Channel show on it a couple of months ago about whether that date was the “end of the world” — fairly interesting show, actually.

It’s when the Mayan calendar ends. Its sometime close to but before December 25th. Cant remember the exact day.

All I know is that I don’t have to go Christmas shopping that year but I’m still on the hook to get my wife a Birthday gift on the 18th. So sometime that week.

Hey wide the Mayans even gave us a date in 2012. December 21, 2012.

Wonder if I should hold up and wait to buy Christmas Presents.

Naaa, maybe I'll go out and buy that 100 inch plasma tv on a credit card.

The end of the Mayan Calendar - which may or may not be the end of the world.
