Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

From the USMC Statement at the link above:

On October 18, 2007, NCIS recommends no disciplinary action be initiated on the alleged rape until forensic evidence DNA can be retrieved from the child. Cpl Laurean denied having any sexual contact with LCpl Lauterbach and this was believed to be significant evidence.

On October 22, 2007, the regimental commander submits a request for legal services requesting prosecutors review the investigation and provide a recommended Course of Action with an eye towards an Article 32 investigation. An Article 32 investigation allows for witnesses to testify under oath and subject to cross examination. An accused is present and represented by counsel.

Funny, I kept thinking of it like “homeroom” high school classmates - same principle. Laurean - Lauterbach.

The dirtbag has “family” in Mexico, so he is either headed there, or is there already. We know how easy it is to sneek into OUR country, what about sneeking out of it?

I am sure that if he can get to the border he’ll get out just fine. Sadly.

***Any news overnight? Have not seen anything yet...***

Nothing on Laurean sightings.

It looks as if the Media’s questions on the circumstances of the *rape* investigations were answered by the official Marine report.

Watched Nancy Grace last night; she was so abrasive and accusatory - claiming that Maria’s death could have been prevented by the Marines or the Sheriff. That Laurean should have been arrested and jailed until a trial. Does she not remember Nifong??

Waiting to determine whether Laurean is a sociopath or a one-time rage killer, who was confronted by the wife & Lauterbach and couldn’t handle the mess he created.

Actually Laurean could have been arrested and confided to the Brig for rape under the UCMJ, someone decided that doing so wasn’t necessary to protect L/CPL Maria Lauterbach from him instead they used a piece of paper.

***someone decided***

IIRC decisions in this case were based on Lauterbach’s *not feeling threatened*.

Of course, we cannot ask her because she is dead.

Good summary of what we have been told as of today:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,323116,00.html

Excerpts:
Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach alleged in May that Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean had raped her in March and April. A pregnancy test soon after was negative, Marine Corps officials said Tuesday, but a test in June was positive. Doctors estimated the date of conception was May 14.

Corps officials said Lauterbach met with prosecutors in November and said she no longer believed Laurean was the father. She disappeared the next month.

He said she still considered both to be incidents of rape, and that Lauterbach’s regimental commander treated her allegations seriously. Her commander was intent on taking the case to an Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of a grand jury proceeding.

Laurean never violated a military protective order directing him to stay away from Lauterbach, continued to report for work on time in the weeks after her disappearance and denied having any sexual contact with her, said Col. Gary Sokoloski, the judge advocate general officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force.

“At no time did she indicate that she was threatened by Cpl. Laurean,” Sokoloski said. “When she was asked if she felt threatened by Cpl. Laurean, she said she did not feel threatened.”

__________________________________________________________
If Maria’s *getting out* note is authentic...one scenario being offered is that she met with Laurean to forgive him and/or bury the hatchet. It’s possible that he was outraged at her having caused him so much trouble and not staying around to clear his name & *snapped*. It would be even more tragic if Maria was trying to make amends and died as a result.

Don’t know - but this case is not over ‘til it’s over.

I’m seeing Lauren as a sociopath.

The definer is the long term actions, not the killing. One thing to kill someone, another to burn then bury the body, but by lots of charcoal first etc. A pregnant woman at that (no effort to save the baby). The amount of blood spatter also shows someone out of control, not just angry.

I’m wondering if he’s still alive. Sightings have occurred, but not verified, and some were discounted. Some perps have been known to commit suicide rather than face the inevitable, and then there’s that niggling little concern about his wife, who really bothers me.

Something about all this feels contrived. I hope they get this thing figured out soon.

***someone out of control***

or sociopathic?

Perhaps Laurean was so obsessed with Maria...*if* she made an effort to *let bygones be bygones* & leave Camp LeJeune ...he could not accept that she would be completely out of his life.

Is it possible that he viewed the MPO as a form of continued involvement in her life? And, having to confront one another in a possible Article 32 proceeding also kept their lives tied together.

His response to her rape accusations have not been reported. Did he adamantly refute them, or did he take some sort of sociopathic pleasure in admitting he had sexual encounters with her?

Just pondering.

He could have mailed the letters from here or anywhere to a friend in Texas and had them drop them in a P.O. Box
