Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

From the WRAL link above, this:

"Christina Laurean gave authorities the note from her husband last Friday. Her parents said she was at work when Lauterbach died, and she tried to convince her husband to meet with authorities about her death."

What does that say to you guys? If the wife was home that night after working, she must have been aware of the blood. I don't think anyone could get it cleaned up satisfactorily in that amount of time without the wife asking questions. IOW, she wasn't out of town that day.

The wife's parents sure are chatty.

Too bad that they did not use bloodhounds this afternoon. They got there at 4:30 and the truck had been there less than two hours. The dogs would prove whether he got into another vehicle or fled on foot.

Where was the daughter if the mother was working? With Cesar as he did away with Maria?

Strange to hear not a single word from Laurean’s parents... you would think they’d ask him to turn himself in before possibly being shot as a fugitive.

The news said she’s safe with the wife’s parents, I believe.

Or as can happen in NC, being involved in a “hunting accident”. :-)

“Where was the daughter if the mother was working? “

Probably at day care. Dec. 15 was a Saturday, so who knows?

Eric Rudolph hid out in the Carolina mountains for five years until he was
caught in the act of dumpster diving. I don’t know if Cesar, a paper pusher, has had much in the way of survival training.

Laurean will only survive if he makes it to Mexico. He’s no Eric Rudolph by any stretch of the imagination.

If I found out that my daughter and grandchild had been murdered like they had, I’d be far too too upset to want to deal with the media.

Really, they are hurting so badly right now. Maybe later.

That’s what I mean. You would expect silence from Maria’s parents, but not from Laurean’s who you would think would be outraged that their son could commit such a heinous crime.

Wonder if they are being interviewed by the Hispanic media in Las Vegas. Might check some spanish language news sites there.

I believe that pre-natal medical leave is authorized by the attending OB-GYN. There are some other interesting points, though in this MCO. It’s dated 2004, and appears to be the most current.
_____________________________________

4. d. Billeting
(1) Per reference (a), a pregnant active duty servicewoman with no
family members may reside in bachelor quarters for her full term. If the
pregnant servicewomen requests, the host commander may authorize her to
occupy off-base housing up to her 20th week of pregnancy. From the 20th week
onward, the host commander must approve a request to occupy off-base housing.
_______________________________

14. a. The servicewoman’s CO may grant a period of convalescent leave for an
active duty servicewoman who is not fit for duty and requires additional
medical care as recommended by her OB HCP. The length of convalescent leave
will normally be 42 days after discharge from the MTF following any
uncomplicated vaginal delivery or cesarean section. The servicewoman may
terminate leave earlier with approval from an HCP.

b. It is the responsibility of the servicewoman to report any
complications or medical problems that she has experienced during
convalescent leave to her attending physician. The attending physician may
then recommend an extension beyond the standard 42 days based on the
servicewoman’s clinical circumstances. The HCP must certify that the patient
is not fit for duty, will not need hospitalization during the contemplated
convalescent leave period, and that such leave will not delay the final
disposition of the patient. The servicewoman’s permanent command must be
notified of this recommendation.

options in establishing paternity and obtaining child support.
