January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Laurean’s in-laws, Bruce and Debby Shifflet, told The Early Show that their daughter Christine spoke with Laurean. They say she asked him to turn himself in for the sake of the family.
“He said, he didn’t want to go to the pen for this,” Bruce Shifflet told The Early Show. “He was remorseful, but he left anyway.”
The potential sightings in Louisiana came a day after authorities said they recovered what they believe to be the burned remains of Lauterbach and her unborn child from a fire pit in Laurean’s backyard, where they suspect he burned and buried her body.
Detectives believe he fled Jacksonville before dawn Friday, and said he left behind a note in which he admitted burying her body but claimed she cut her own throat in a suicide. Authorities received Laurean’s note about the purported suicide from Laurean’s wife, whose family has described her as “heartbroken.”
Brown has challenged Laurean’s assertion that Lauterbach killed herself, citing what he described as evidence of a violent confrontation inside Laurean’s home - blood spatters on the ceiling and a massive amount of blood on the wall.
“I thought he was a man of character and it’s obviously he is just a coward taking off on his family and leaving,” Bruce Shifflet told The Early Show. “This is just a tragedy for both families.”

Ah. Say no more. Hopefully he’ll be found soon, especially with the reward posted now. As the sheriff said, the manhunt is “Earthwide”.
Heated discussion with a neighbor who wanted answers:
1. Did the *rape* occur in March?
2. Was the rape violent and was Maria treated at a hospital with rape kit etc.,?
3. Rape not reported until April by which time she was 1 month pregnant?
4. Rape charge handled at unit level as a minor dispute - not passed up to highest level of Marine command?
5. When the adoptive mother reported Maria missing to the Sheriff did she name Laurean as a possible person of interest? She was well aware of the circumstances of the pregnancy and all other matters related to the rape charges, the Military Orders of Protection and renewals.
6. Was the wife present in the home for the period Dec.15th to Jan 11th?
7. Did Maria drive her car to Laurean’s home, or was she abducted at the bus station?
8. Who returned her car to the bus station and if it was Laurean - who drove him back to his house?
Hi sodpoodle...Has it been said HOW Laurean ended up knowing what Maria’s PIN # was on her card?

Rut-roh. Neighbors saying today that the Laureans had an outdoor party...sounds like it was recently. Neighbors also saying that the Mrs. might have been involved in the painting. As per reporter on FOX.

I suspected as such. How could she not know? In my opinion only, they planned this a while ago. Also found it interesting that the wife found the note at 4:00 am and didn’t report it to police until 8:00 am. Heck, he had plenty of time to beat feet.

Shep is raising the horro that the defense attorneys might try to compare Sheriff Ed Brown to DA Nifong’s *RUSH TO JUDGEMENT*
Attorney says sheriff is making rational comments - no foul if the evidence supports his claims - they are not prejudicial - because they show cause for the arrest warrant. (my summary).
Not good. Bet she’s about to become a lot less “cooperative”.
My guess is that the Missus has been part of this since the beginning. Like she knew about the rape charge and the pregnancy.
Maybe they were planning on taking the baby and making it look like Marie and skipped town. Something went wrong in the procuremnet process-— and Marie and the baby died.
So, they cleaned house and disposed of the body/s. But the family kept making a stink. SO, plan two. Him running and her trying to make out like there was a suicide that went south.
IOW, I think the wife is as guilty as the husband. As you can tell, I’m feeling really cranky today. But if you paint the walls after a murder, you’re guilty of sumtin’.
I think Shep just swung & missed on that one. The burned bodies were found in their yard. Blood on the walls....painted over....blood in the garage...suspect missing...
No rush to judgment there Sheppard.
