January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
If YOU had read further, you'd know she was brain storming suggesting that if the girl had committed suicide, someone could have found her and buried her, because "he" felt like he'd have been accused of her murder anyway.
Now, as the story progresses, the scenario seems unlikely, but it wasn't so bizarre, in theory.

Ah, jeez.
You did very well Mom!
Yes.
What we have is a married Marine with a wife and pregnant girlfriend, who is scared for his military career.
A fragile, angry, impregnated Marine who has charged the father of unborn child with rape.
A very angry wife.
Anything is possible. An attack on the girlfriend by the wife, or an attempted suicide by the girlfriend and an unexpected spontaneous delivery. A panicked, cornered married Marine who interrupts a bloody fight between the two women.
Same here. I've said that the only thing the press gets right is sports scores....because they're important and there are too many witnesses.
CBS “NCIS”!!!
see my post #165 which I meant to copy you.
You missed one scenario, a Marine that may have made dead and buried a solution in his life.
Yes, his wife turned over the letter and it is behind the couple's (the alleged killer) house where they are digging for the body. The wife knew the dead lady had accused her husband of raping her and it is his child the dead lady was caring.
Thanks Ms. Obvious;) LOL!!!!
There's always a first time.
The house is one street behind one of my good friend’s home. It is about five miles down the road from me. Still creepy, though.
Amazingly, it turns out that that is exactly the suspect's story. His wife reportedly is the witness who came forward. Here's what he allegedly told his wife:
Before fleeing Jacksonville on Friday, Laurean gave his wife a note that said Lauterbach cut her own throat, the person said. Laurean said in the note that he had nothing to do with her suicide, but that he had buried her body, the person said. But crime scene investigators found blood stains and obvious signs that a cleanup had taken place inside the home...
Incidentally, they should be searching for two people: the woman and her baby, who was due very soon.
I’m guessing investigators haven’t ruled anything out. My first assumption was that he committed murder to cover the crime. But maybe he’s missing because he’s not alive, either.
It’s so sad that the life of a mother and her baby had to end this way. Here she was, carrying the baby to term and considering adoption. And, in return for that good deed, she was murdered, it appears. I’m still hoping at least the baby miraculously survived and was taken somewhere safe.
She had many other options open to her, yet she chose to follow in her late grandfathers footsteps and become part of the Corps.
Of course her father and I had reservations, but she told us she wanted to give back something to the country that had given her so much.
We have met several of her brother and sister Marines, and I must say that I would be proud to be the parent of any one of them.
When I look around the malls and coffee shops and see some of the messed up, self centered, rude members of my daughters generation, I thank the Lord that there are those who are so willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for you and me.
I have been lurking here for a long time, but this got me steamed enough to post. Thanks for letting me rant!
God Bless you and your husband for raising such a fine daughter!
My father was in the Marines and fought in the Pacific theatre of operations in WW2. I assume that her grandfather was the same age / generation as my father.
I went to MCRD San Diego in Oct 1974. Got out in 1978. I was a Ground Radio Technician. I never saw any combat.
I think that her generation will see some real challenges. But those that are mentally well-grounded, smart, tough and can adapt will survive.
The alledged rapists wife is active duty.
Then there is a "note".
There ya go! Miz gave us one scenerio, and what these people are going to say probably is close to it, be it truth or fiction.

Thanks for the info.
The wife was silent from Dec 14, until Jan 10th...when the Sheriff started to close in. Did she not live in the house during that time? Was she out of town for the holidays?
OR, do you suppose Maria L. was coerced to go to the Laurean home to discuss the *problem* and was ambushed?
Remember the 2 navy cadets who killed the 16 year-old girlfriend and that other married couple who killed & robbed the VA tourists? Diabolical bonding!!!!
Our society is sliding into Sodom & Gomorrah.
