January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
After I posted, I did hear the sheriff say they had physical evidence.
Searching near your home? Creepy.
GMTA. :)
Our military come from the same pool of people our police do. We find good and bad in both because there are good and bad in our population.
We do hold them to a higher standard but we have to remember, they're human with human faults and weakness and fragilities.
But are you married to a fishwife?
Ubiquitous Anoreth is counting the days until she can join the military. (I’m hoping to persuade her to get a year of community college in first, if only for the advantages in rank!) She wants to serve our country, and she wants Adventure!
and then she buried herself in a shallow grave? Boy, that would be a good trick...
Encourage her....seriously, I’d do it if I had it all to do over again (Ok, AFTER college and instead of marriage).
I don’t think he’s married dear...
that may be part of the problem.
Same reason a lot of guys go in — job training, good benefits, etc. I don’t know where she’s from but a career in the military where she could gain some job skills and decent benefits probably sounds a lot more appealing than waiting tables or making minimum wage at the local Wal-Mart. I think women can effectively serve in administrative positions.
Perhaps. I just imagined his being married to some woman like the hildabeast and took this opportunity to work out a little frustration. Of course the other possibility you mentioned causes frustration as well. lolol
No matter his spouse,
he has no excuse for his behavior.
I’m still trying to figure out what got him so angry.
No excuse whatsoever. I agree.
I was a civilian typist for the DoD for a few years during college. I was about to apply for a Corps of Engineers post in Oman when I got serious with my future husband :-).
We have a lot of military experience in the family, and we’re encouraging Anoreth to prepare herself sensibly - community college classes, Girl Scouts awards, physical training - and discussing how to make the most of an enlistment. The military can be terrific for a young person who lives frugally and takes advantage of the opportunities for education, training, and travel. She wants to be an auto or airplane mechanic and go to Iraq; she’s good with tools and machinery, at least compared to me.
My brother joined the Air Force because Mom said he had to move out at 21, but he found it was perfect for him and had a very successful 22-year career. Now he’s working for the AF as a civilian! My father was a Navy officer, 27 years. I think Anoreth has the personality to be career military, too: very intelligent, like my brother, but needs a lot of structure and rewards to do her best.
I went to college right out of high school, and didn’t have to Get Real and get a real work ethic until I had a job. I think, especially with the way things have changed in the last 20 years, that some serious work, whether it’s military or civilian, is a good idea before college.
You know, I really have no problem with this except for the part where women have to pretend that they are equal to men in combat roles. And, where training and discipline rules are relaxed from what they were as late as the 1970s.
I agree with you there. I don’t think women should be in combat roles either. In my opinion, each gender has different strengths — the key is finding roles that play to those strengths. This extends to many civilian roles also. :-)
You are correct! Women definitely have a role in the military and they have served honorably, but they should not be in combat.
They have begun to report in some media that some charred and burned human remains were found at that house.
Shep - Fox News just reporting:
Tipped off by note that woman had killed herself.
Burned remains found.
