January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
Authorities have named the man who allegedly raped her as a suspect in her death - Cesar Armando Lauren. The hunt is on to find Cesar Armando Lauren, who was last seen 8 hours ago leaving Onslow County. He is believed to be driving a black Dodge Pickup with the North Caroline tag 1522.
News conference right now. The Sheriff is alluding to more than just a murder and that this will likely have a bizarre ending.
After some slight digging in a fire pit discovered in the yard of Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, detectives found what “appeared to be burnt human remains,” Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said Friday night.

She had many other options open to her, yet she chose to follow in her late grandfather’s footsteps and become part of the Corps.
Of course her father and I had reservations, but she told us she wanted to give back something to the country that had given her so much.
We have met several of her brother and sister Marines, and I must say that I would be proud to be the parent of any one of them.
When I look around the malls and coffee shops and see some of the messed up, self centered, rude members of my daughter’s generation, I thank the Lord that there are those who are so willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for you and me.
I have been lurking here for a long time, but this got me steamed enough to post. Thanks for letting me rant!
Luminol leads sheriff to believe that the murder occurred in the house. One part shows attempts to clean up blood. Another shows stains were painted over.
What I don’t understand is this:
Mr. Lauren was married? Sheriff tight-lipped about whether the wife was the one turning over “the letter.”
Also, whose house is this that’s being investigated?
Things can happen anywhere, but this is not typical of Marines.
Yup. But his wife is cooperating with officials......
Wife?!?
Oh this is getting weird.
Yes, it was called the General’s Daughter.
Boy, that's the truth.
You can't handle the truth!
That starred John Travolta didn’t it?
I wonder if all the blood found via the luminol might be due to a murderer going even more insane and performing an inexperienced c-section.
On Larry King just now, Sheriff Brown said the remains were not intact.
BWAHAHAHA!
I don’t know. Hopefully the reporter was a little more accurate with that “fact” than the supposed Sr. Officer, which was actually a corporal.
Yes, lets ignore the most obvious and likely cause of death, murder, and concoct a story about how it was a very unlikely suicide. You are a regular sleuth and a really logical person, aren’t you. (unbelievable)
I thought the same thing when I read a report on CNN about an hour ago. Near the end the sheriff stated that they had been in contact with his wife, he described her as ‘cooperative’. I thought “WIFE???” Geez. Feel bad for her too.
Yeah, I feel sorry for the wife and families in all this.
Okay, at this point I suspect General Specific and Private Public; though it could have been General Apathy and Major Boredom*.
*That's two! two! two! obscure cultural references in one post. Oh, now it's three.
Sad that anyone would do this. He is a corporal.
