SANTA FE, N.M. -- A woman drowned when she apparently tried to retrieve a kitten from a 55-gallon rain barrel at her home southeast of Santa Fe.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano said 48-year-old Deborah Hill was found by her husband Sunday afternoon after he returned home from running errands. Solano said the couple had dragged the plastic barrel inside their home because they wanted to thaw ice that had formed in the barrel.
The barrel, which Solano said was tied to a door so it wouldn't tip, was about one-third full of water when the kitten fell in. Solano said Hill apparently was standing on something to reach down for the kitten when she slid in.
Detectives said the kitten is alive, and most likely climbed out over Hill.
Kitty ping. Poor lady!
Sad and stupid. I feel very bad for her husband who no doubt has a tremendous amount of guilt over this.
strange and disturbing
Oops, you already got me with this one. My bad! Guess it never hurts to check “New Posts to You” before sending out a ping...
No worries. Please keep pinging me!
All logic and safety go right out the window when it comes to animals, any animal, not just our pets.
“The barrel, which Solano said was tied to a door so it wouldn’t tip”
WHY WOULD IT TIP?
Excellent question!
The woman was normally locked in her room...obviously for alzheimers or the like. Someone forgot to lock the door and lo and behold..she committed rain barrel suicide.
Clue: She was very wealthy.
Grandpa had one. I'd say it's really pretty hard to fall into a rainbarrel.
Because his wife fell in it.
Good thinking, Sherlock!! Who tied it to the door.
She was obviously a democrat.
She must have hit her head on the bottom of the pool when she dived in....
So you bring a barrel in...out of public view...wife falls in and dies.....while you're away and there's a wet cat running around.
Can someone explain how hubbie knew the cat was in the barrel and that's why wifie was in the barrel?
Why not just stick a broom, a coat..or anything in the barrel so the cat could latch on.
This really doesn't pass the smell test.
Why worry about ice in a barrel?
Wait! Come back! I have lots more questions!
Because his wife fell in it.
Yeah, exactly.
Even were it a steel 55 gallon drum, only being a third full her weight probably would have been enough to tip it. Why would they worry that a plastic barrel tip, especially when it was going to just sit there and thaw? It wouldn’t, unless he was worried his wife’s body was going to tip it before she drowned.
“why would it tip?”
go to the video link and it is easy to see why it would tip, it has a rounded bottom. She may also have had a medical condition according to authorities.
Yep, that’s the other big question. Ice in a barrel? So what? Why was it so important to get this barrel into the house to “thaw”?
