The Hobbit Hole XXXV - ...is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
Posted on 01/03/2008 6:35:58 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I have a 6X fixed sight on the standard SOCOM and it is a snap shooting tool for sure. I like it !It sounds nice. I'll have to give something like that serious consideration.
I'm still thinking over some sort of 7.62 NATO semiauto while waiting for the FN SCAR (two years-to-never, depending on who wins the election). I've always liked the looks of the FN FAL, but I don't know enough about it to make an informed decision. About all I know are the clones range from cheap (and probably junky) to expensive.

Agree ....metric vs inch seems like more trouble than I like . Hiredhand has one I think.....pinged him to see if he has good info. I have always liked the M1A’s.....carried one almost my entire career as an EOD tech in the service. we used the scoped match grade versions for a process called SMUD where we shot small munitions to disrupt them . I figured no reason to pack a M4 as well so I carried two 1911A1’s and a crap load of M1A mags .........good weapon in all environments I was deployed too.
The SOCOM is a great shooter. I am doing a 3 gun match in May and will take the SOCOM with me as well to see how it performs . I expect good things .
Stay safe !

Great screencap. Doesn’t look like the legal length to me. If you or I wanted to own that, we’d have to have a Federal Permit. ‘Course I don’t think the Fed’s jurisdiction extends to The Island.
To: ecurbh; HairOfTheDog; LSAggie
Yeah, even with the screen caps I got, I saw nothing that clearly.
But it’s probably convenient in the dessert. It could double as a toilet paper holder.
To: HairOfTheDog
OK - so that part makes sense now... does anything else? Pieces are fitting together. I thought for a minute we were seeing why the baby was with Kate. Tricksey they were.
And it's pretty clear that Ben has some connection to the Smokey Monster.

Doesnt look like the legal length to me. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Ben doesn't give a frak.
To: ecurbh
That's a vey sawed-off Remington 870. A smart operator will sandwich a small metal plate underneath the magazine cap, extending down below the pump handle. That's to prevent your hand from sliding forward off the handle, and into the muzzle.

About the FAL...I don't know "much", but here's what I discovered with mine. Avoid inch pattern FALs. These were British L1A1s and Canadian C1A1s as far as I know. As with a LOT of things, the Brits had to make very subtle changes and interchanging parts from the inch to metric rifles can be a problem. I'm reasonably certain that all but the L1A1s and C1A1s were metric. I pretty much started with an Imbel Type-III receiver, and an STG-58 (Austrian Metric FAL) barrel, and by the time I had bought the DSA lower and full gas system (because mine was worn out basically), I could have just bought DSAs SA-58 rifle outright! I wish I had.
I'm not so certain that the FAL platform would be best at this time. M1A might be the best at the time because of parts availability. I do believe I'm going to hang onto mine for the time being, but I am concerned about parts availability and need to pick up some necessary spares.
Squantos was one of the reasons I picked up a couple of M4s (clones...one Armalite, and one DPMS). They're a lot of bang for the buck in a very small package! Granted, they aren't 7.62mm NATO, but for the money and parts availability, they are "logistically feasible" more into the future than the FAL.
I'd STILL like a DSA SA-58 though. They're nice. :-) http://www.dsarms.com. All of theirs are patterned from the Austrian STG-58 and are therefore metric.

About the FAL...I don't know "much", but here's what I discovered with mine. That's quite a bit of information there, thanks. I believe some brands of FAL clones are metric-based, but use "inch" magazines, which are supposedly easier to come by.
OTOH, M14 magazines are still pretty common, so there's one supply problem avoided right there.
At this rate, it looks like it will be a product from Springfield Armory. I've looked at the AR10-types, but again they're in my gray area. The M14 and I go back a long ways, although the M16 was my "steady date".

I DO like the adustable gas system on the FAL. I forgot to mention it. If it so happens that IF all you have is (for example) HOT 180gr ammo, then you can open the regulator a bit and ease up the stress on your rifle....AND your shoulder! I've read that although it's not "generally" a problem that SOME 7.62mm NATO ammo can operate the M1A too "fast". I read about this when we started reloading for the FAL. With the FAL, it's not an issue because the gas regulator can be adjusted.
It's a smooth rifle though. My kids started shooting mine when they were about 9 yrs old each. Granted, they had to shoot from a bipod because of weight, but they could still shoot it AND strike targets!
Now one of them outweighs me by almost 20 lbs and he's trying to talk me OUT of the FAL. I might swap him, but I dont' think I'll GIVE it away just yet! :-)

I'm "reasonably" certain that the prevalent FAL is metric, and that inch pattern mags are RARE. 100% inch pattern FALs in original condition are valuable, but you're probably like me and will want to USE the thing! Beware of junk FALs floating around out there. :-)
I was considering DSA's SA-58 tactical carbine before we had to disburse funds in other areas of "home security". :-)
I do believe that the M1A (M14) is a more accurate rifle. Squantos can sanity-check me on this, but I'm pretty sure that's the case. The FAL isn't amazingly accurate, although we did manage to get some sub MOA groups at 300 yards with "carefully" handloaded ammo....but that's a LOT of trouble for a weapon that's MADE to digest ammo and get hot. :-)
I was thinking about buying an AR-10 a couple of years ago and the shop down the road is an Armalite dealer. My buddy in there is a retired USAR/Airborne NCO and he said that they are FINE rifles but that I wouldn't like them! When I asked why, he said, "RECOIL". Him and I are both of slender builds. So I didn't go with the AR-10. But he told me that by all other accounts, they are fine rifles!
The M1A SOCOM 16 is supposed to be an EXCELLENT little package! If I had to go back and buy a .308, I'd be sorely tempted to buy one of them!

I am probably the only person on earth that has fed their M1A’s ONLY a steady diet of Federal Match or at times some Mexican Match at leg matches . I have my scopes zeroed for 168gr HPBT Federal match and have a few cases of that rat holed for a rainy day and keep my working mags stocked with it as well.
Guatemalan / Ethiopian surplus ammo scares me .......:o)

Yeah, I’m thinkin’ you’re probably right.
I’m soooo confused on the time line. I need a map. I’m feeling dizzy right now.
To: RosieCotton
Actually I think this episode helped the timeline. The crash was in 2004, and we’ve actually only seen them on the island a few weeks (couple months or so). So Sayid got back, married Nadia. She was killed in 2005, then he went to work for Ben.
Question is, who killed Nadia? Was it Widmore’s people?
Or Ben?
This would also (I think) be after Kate’s trial and after Hurley goes to see Sun (because of the age of both babies).
To: Squantos; 300winmag
Yeah...that's a GOOD point about foreign surplus ammo! I forgot about that issue! We decapped, deprimed, sized, trimmed, and reloaded approx 600 rounds of real CRAP that a buddy of mine bought which was Indian surplus. Later on, there was a safety notice issued by several of the outlets. As it turns out, the distance between shoulder and head was a little much and "could" cause a semi-auto weapon to fire OUT OF BATTERY! ...not a good thing!
