Anti-Mormons Attacks Must Stop, FR is Better Than That (Vanity)
December 12 2007 | jveritas

Posted on 12/12/2007 6:27:59 PM PST by jveritas

Dear FRiends

It really pains me to see some of those vicious anti-Mormons attacks we see on Free Republic disguised under the “freedom of speech. Attacking people based on their Mormon faith is really disgusting and it is an insult to this great forum. People who do not like Governor Mitt Romney based on his positions are free to express their opinion as such, but people who attack him because he is a Mormom should be ashamed of themselves and must not be allowed to do so.

I greatly hope that Free Republic members and moderators will get together and help in stopping this anti-Mormon vitriol, this great Free Republic must not be tainted by these shameless acts.

Its worth noting your thread has been repeated on multiple leftwing and or ‘kook’ sites since you posted it.

I agree with you, btw.

The question you posted above: Are there any candidates you are aware of that have expressed beliefs or exhibited behaviours that indicate they subscribe to past (but not current) Mormon church doctrine?

Asked of a candidate it would be -- "What in your life shows that you have cast off past Mormon doctrine on African-Americans?"

"What in your life shows that you have cast off past Mormon doctrine on African-Americans?"

Why not just ask "How do we know you're not a racist?"

I think I’ve figured it out....

Mormons had high hopes of finally getting a POTUS. Now that it appears as if his beliefs are considered non-Christian by many in the Christian right and are hurting his chances we are seeing a Mormon conniption fit resembling closely the ranting of the liberal left when they want to attack Christians.

Do Mormons really believe....
Mormons: lies
mischaracterization
you bigots

Does Romney actually stand for anything conservative? It is so hard to tell after listening to the hysteria of his supporters.

I like the way you put it in that longer question.

If I’m African-American, I want to be able to ask the question. It would be important to me because it was reversed fairly recently (1978) and definitely within the adult life of Romney.

What if I asked you this, Romney's speech seemed to be in conflict with the LDS teachings. Does he feel he need not follow the LDS Prophet? Mormonism professes this about Prophets: "We sustain the President of the Church as prophet, seer, and revelator—the only person on the earth who receives revelation to guide the entire Church."

In fact the Prophet of the Church Ezra Taft Benson said in his speech entitled:

First: The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.

Second: The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.

Third: The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.

Fourth: The prophet will never lead the Church astray.

Fifth: The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.

Sixth: The prophet does not have to say "Thus saith the Lord" to give us scripture.

Seventh: The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.

Eighth: The prophet is not limited by men's reasoning.

Ninth: The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.

Tenth: The prophet may be involved in civic matters.

Eleventh: The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.

Twelfth: The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.

Thirteenth: The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency--the highest quorum in the Church.

Fourteenth: The prophet and the presidency--the living prophet and the First Presidency--follow them and be blessed; reject them and suffer.

If I’m African-American, I want to be able to ask the question.

What would you consider sufficient proof that the man is not a racist? He was activily participating in the church when they made that change.

I don’t disagree, but I think the Mormons can actually produce their bronze artifacts. No telling whatever became of Moses’ tablets.

And the MOST outrageous of their screams:

“You can’t vote against someone based on their religion!”

To which I ask, how many Mormons will vote for Mike Huckabee, or even Fred Thompson? I venture a very small minority MIGHT vote for each.

The vocal few are following false teachings, plain and simple, when they judge the faith of another.

False teachings?

According to whom?

I'd be interested in your research.

References, etc.....

It’s not a matter of proof.

It’s a matter of being allowed to ask the question if I feel led to do so.

Maybe I just want to see how he’ll deal with it.

He’d better be prepared, too, because this is one area the liberals just might go after.

What would you answer?

I’d be real clear. I’d thank the person for their question. Then I’d say simply say that, even though I was still young, that was an element of church teaching that I had never supported.

This religious bigotry is tolerated here.

That's the bottom line and contrary to Constitutional principles.

Disparaging comments re many faiths, many sects and branches of Christianity, have been made on forum but usually confined specifically to religion topics. The posters make their comments, then move on.

In this case, the anti-Mormon peanut gallery has been relentless. We know what the opinion of these dozen or so posters is, yet they repeat endlessly at great length.

I wouldn't propose a ban, but a LIMIT. And I do not see any limit being put on the spammers.

Now.... try saying something true about Fred Thompson that happens to be unflattering and doesn't fit his new "conservative" image... well, that would be another story.

***“You can’t vote against someone based on their religion!”***

While I do disagree in that I think that Mormons will rally around whomever gets the Republican nod simply because Mormons are faithful Republicans, I would think it funny to see them suddenly use religion as a criteria against someone who is Muslim or Scientologist.
