Quick Windows computer question. (Vanity)
today | me

Posted on 12/07/2007 9:01:39 AM PST by thefactor

Hey all!

I have a real quick question that someone should answer in about 5 posts. My mom bought a Toshiba lap top. We have wireless cable internet. The lap top automatically connects to the wireless network but the internet will not come up!

I do a diagnostic and the laptop shows my wireless network but there is evidently an issue with the IP address. As in the lap top doesn’t have the IP address. Do I have to restart the wireless network? Please help me! Thanks.

PS-Not to start a war, but this kind of thing is why I'm switching to MAC in a few months. I bought my girl a MacBook last year and the darn thing finds networks automatically and just seems to be user friendly. I'm also getting the iPhone because it is simply the coolest thing i have ever used. Don't hold all of this against me. My mom needs help. Think of the children!

It’s also possible that you’ve set up your router to only accept certain devices connected to it. In that case, you will need the MAC address of the laptop and you’ll need to go into the configuration for the router and add it to the list of acceptable devices.

Yes, a Mac would also require the network key and also would not connect to your network.

One other possibility is that your router is set to only accept a specified number of connections and you alreasy have reached that number, or it’s set to allow computers on the LAN but to only allow defined computers access to the WAN and Internet. To check this you need to connect to the router as an administrator.

they are sending someone out here to check it out. thanks for your help. it's something with static IP settings or something.

HERE's anohter question for you:

when i connect to the unsecured network, the internet works. EXCEPT when i try to go to my yahoo or gmail email pages. i can go to yahoo.com and google.com but not the email portions of those pages. i am able to get on hotmail though. microsoft runs hotmail.

i do not wear tinfoil hats but i am wondering if there is something blocking me from my yahoo page?

Hey, Sorry. I had to run onto base for a bit before I headed home for the weekend.

Sorry that didn’t get it. Usually the WEP is the problem.

As far as not being able to get onto you yahoo from the unsecured network, that seems kind of strange. The only thing I can think is something got turned on in your security settings that is blocking it. The only other thing would be the unsecured net has some sort of firewall protection, but that doesn’t make sense to me. You wouldn’t set up a router with firewall features and then leave it unsecured.

Best bet is to wait until the tech guy comes out and works out the issues with the static IP settings and then try it from your wireless router. If you are still not able to get into those accounts then it is definately a setting on your machine.

Freepmail me if you have any other questions.

the lap top now connects to an unsecured wireless network that someone in my vicinity has

The problem is there are huge number of things to be configured and matched up.

If nothing else is using the router, try this: Go into the router's settings (likely http://192.168.1.1), reset them to default and start fresh. There may also be a tiny button in the back you can push in with a paper clip to reset the router. Now most likely you'll be able to immediately connect if you're already connecting to other open networks.

Now read the router's manual on how to set up encryption to secure your router, unless you want to run an open WiFi point.

You may need to set some specified search domains... Your ISP should tell you what addresses need to be input.

A list of wireless signals hitting your computer should appear in the list. Click on the one that is yours and a screen should appear that asks for your password. That’s how mine works.

turns out is was a setting on the wireless router. i guess there is ONE setting that is different on a particular model of netgear router and i happened to get one of these models. they look the exact same and the setting wasn’t setup right in the initial installation. so the problem was with the cable guy! thanks again.

they are just more user friendly. i'll still have a PC for word and writing papers.

but when my girl or i are away from home, we'll still be able to see and talk to eachother through the integrated camera which is a great feature.

plus, good luck trying to set up the iPhone through windows! i've had enough issues with just iTunes.

I guess there is a value to iTunes. Got people to buy a MAC again. As for iPhone, Boost Unlimited is not providing it so don't need to worry about that one...or the bill for the iPhone either. Anyhow, sounds like you will enjoy your MAC. Merry Christmas to you. Send us a picture. FReepRegards

oh believe me. my girl is the one who just had to have the iphone. but i did become a convert after 10 minutes with it.

and the family plan with plenty of minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet browsing will be under $200/month for both of us.

the darn thing locks onto any open wifi and if there is none available it uses the AT&T signal for the net. i can use it at work and not need to use my work computer to use email or anything else. and we all know how offices are cracking down on employee internet use.

i'm not trying to sell it, just validating my own desire to have such a cool, yet relatively luxurious excessive piece of technology.

Funny, I have all that for $65 a month. But my internet browsing is definately inferior to what you have.

My cell phone plan is $55 a month, unilimited talk time and no contract. If I want unlimited text, it is another $5 a month and unlimited internet is another $5 on top of that.

Boost Mobile Unlimited is the best service. So glad I am no longer hostage to a phone plan (hear that Verizon!).
