Apple Retail Stores Revamp for Holidays

LOS GATOS, Calif. (AP) - Not a cash register is in sight. The electronics on display are all powered up and ready for use. Personal trainers, specialists and newly minted concierges in aqua blue shirts make the Apple Store feel part salon, part Internet cafe - just without the espresso.

Over the past year, Apple Inc. (AAPL) has revamped its 201 stores, changing the layout, adding services and increasing its staffing. The "concierge" service that Apple launched last week is only the latest initiative designed to draw more visitors and bolster already record-breaking sales.

"Apple indeed does things differently from the rest of the retail gang," said Kurt Barnard, president of the Barnard Retail Consulting Group.

The Glendale store is HOT, all freshly remodeled, and beautiful. It is all REDONE for the holidays.

I heard that Apple bought a mountain in Italy to cut the slate tile for their stores.

On a serious note, why would they get rid of appointments or at least a ticket # like at a deli counter or bakery?

As far as I know, they haven't. The only one I've heard any complaints about is the Houston store. The last time I was in the Apple Store in Sacramento (over a month ago), there was a list of names on a 50" Plasma screen above and each side of the Genius Bar logo... one for computer help, one for iPhone and iPod help.

Appointments have not been dropped.

“It’s not a business, it’s a religion.”

Yes, and a smug, condescending one at that.

Oh, come on! It's been months since any of us has beheaded a Windows user.

Parallels Workstation allows you to run any Windows software in a window on your Intel OSX Mac transparently as though the apps were Mac apps. With Parallels you can share files back and forth between PC and Mac. You can use the BootCamp created WindowsXP partition or you can use a virtual hard drive file that if it gets infected with a virus or spyware you can simply trash and revert to a clean copy.

You'll want to use WMWare, not Parallels, for doing this. The features are similar but WMWare images are solid and error-free. Parallels images tend to become flaky and hard to start with time, and the virtual disks develop flaws that cause your Windows image to "bluescreen".

First, the Apple iPod wasn't initially a 40 gb player it was only 5gb and it was a bit higher than $200, more like $399

The PC XT had a 10 MB hard drive and cost $8,000.

Thank you!

My husband has been studying for some tests, but in a day or two, he should have them finished and be ready to continue forward with the mac.

One of my biggest fears is that when all of my files are transfered over to a mac, the new computer might become infected. I swear there are all sorts of bugs and such on my current computer that we’ve not been able to remove.

Provided that he doesn’t run Windows on it, and excepting certain Microsoft programs and their macro virii, even with the Intel processor a Mac won’t get a Windows virus. So you don’t really have to worry about it.

I had my 11am one to one this morning. Learning my way around my new MacBook.
The stuff you can do easily is amazing. Drag and drop.

Oh, and the woman ahead of me was at least 75 yrs. old.
A lot of older folks in the store.

I’ve hit on an idea for a Christmas gift for my daughter.
Going to create a stationery template for her.

Anyone transitioning from a PC should really get the one to one service.
I went in with a legal pad of questions. ( I’ve had the Mac about 3 wks.)
Got answers to all of them.
No registry to worry about, no uninstall necessary, just drag it to ‘Trash’, bingo! Lots of neat stuff, and shortcuts.

Say what you want about Mac geeks but Macs really are superior and I’m jumping on the bandwagon.

I’m pretty good with a PC. Clean the registry, defrag often. Poke around in Win Explorer, Photo edit, Surf FR a lot ( too much). Scan for virii/trojans often ( there goes an hour).

Macs, you just use. Don’t have to tinker with them.
Don’t have to spend $50/ yr. for anti- whatever.

There is a learning curve though. Surfing is easy but there is so much they can do w/o having going out and getting a separate program. So much is built into them.
It’s finding the program and how to navigate in them easily that the ‘one to one’ lessons show you.

They are giving $100 toward a printer w/ purchase. I picked out a Canon scanner/printer designed for photo work. Cost $99. Several are free.
As it turns out, and I didn’t realize it when I bought it, it’s Bluetooth enabled.
Consequently I can print right from my MacBook sans wires.

Oh, one more thing. Connected with the school system?
!0% off hardware and MUCH more off some software, 50% on Office for Mac, Aperture ( photo editing ) and likely more programs.

Do tax dollars count? I have two in a private Christian school.

Hmmm...do they offer anything for military? Being a great mom? A FReeper in good standing? :)
