Let’s see...I’ve got a 3.2 gigahertz Intel processor, 2 gigs RAM, LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S [CD-ROM drive]
TSSTcorp CD-R/RW TS-H292C [CD-ROM drive], 160 gigabytes of HD, Creative Sound Blaster 5.1, HP vs 19” monitor with XP Pro with less than $400.00 invested. Apple can’t beat that.

The article presents a stupid argument. Most folks don’t sell their PCs every year. Purchase price is the only real gauge of what you’re paying and the Mac will set you back at least 50% more than the comparably equipped PC.

Aside from the logo you really don’t get that much more for your money.

Worse, if you become a “Mac person” you’ll end up virtually computer illiterate and unable to use real PCs in the real world.

Most PC folks can at least get by on a Mac. The reverse is, in my experience, rarely true.

I have both Macs and PCs scattered around the house. Macs are nice, but not worth the price.

Unfortunately I’m just about to shell out 3K+ for a Mac tower because my wife can’t seem to do her job on the PC that we just bought for 1/3 of that. . .

This is pretty goofy “proof”. For one thing people don’t replace computers every year, or even every two years. And even in things that people do replace regularly analysts know that high resale value doesn’t make it cheaper, it makes the second more affordable but that’s different. Then of course there’s the lame assumption that Windows users just throw away computers when they’re replaced, simply not true, we might not resell them but that doesn’t mean they stop being used, my wife has my previous machine, and the one before that will go to one of a variety of friends and relatives.

Thanks to Apple's relentless flash -- the John Hodgman ads, the iPods, the iPhones -- its Macintosh business is now in league with that of the biggest PC companies in the world.

John Hodgman is PC.

Justin Long is Mac.

It's ironic if the clueless PC guy is the ads' real star.

Got a new iMac Monday. Had some teething pains getting used to it, still have a lot to learn. I'm happy having Time Machine and an external drive. The screen is beautiful and Safari, as advertised, is quick. 'Course that could be the faster 2GHz dual core processor, too . . .

I haven't tried to connect my old Mac to the new one to bring over any files yet, and I still need a codec to read video from my S850 camera. My wife mentioned Office; didn't I read that there some other program suite for the Mac was actually more compatible than the Microsoft Office for Mac version?

Given the rate of development of new hardware and software in either market, coupled with the volatility of pricing, I’m skeptical of anyone claiming to answer the question “once and for all” right out of the gate.

So few PCs are sold while they still have significant value, I’m not sure it sure it makes sense to put too much emphasis on resale value.

There is probably a single overwhelming reason you're clinging to Windows. Macs are expensive. This is what you've been told, and in your research, it's seemed to check out. If they acknowledge it at all, Mac fans will rationalize the higher prices by noting that you're paying for quality.
Actually, I only see that in posts by online trolls. The single overwhelming reason I find in talking to family, friends, and acquaintances is, they think they won't have software compatibility with Office (or some other proprietary software on which they rely for various things).

I was the “guinea pig” in a Mac/Windows experiment some years ago. As the newest designer on the design dept. in a corporation, I needed a computer. The powers-that-be said Macs cost too much and that we needed to get a Windows PC. By the time we got the PC, loaded it up with all the fonts, graphic card, etc. that I would need (not including the software) the Windows machine came in at a whopping $1,000 more than the latest Mac machine. This was back in ‘97 and things have evened out much more since then.

Glad to see you keep evangelizing for Macs but I’ve gotten tired of begging people who aren’t predisposed to try them.

Some people seem to get hung up on the goofy advertising and perception that Macs are for metrosexual/homosexual/multicultural liberal zombies.

Others don’t want to shell out that extra $200 off the top for the hardware.

But, if they can get past all that and just go ahead and buy the stupid thing they’ll be amazed.

I don’t know how they couldn’t be. Paying that extra few hundred up front gets you the difference between a Chevy Citation and a Corvette.

My parents have these epic battles keeping their PC’s functioning smoothly - I’m at the point where I tell them I don’t want to hear about anymore. Get a Mac and stop bugging me.
