Yes, they did have Roamin’ toilets in England. I don’t think they were on wheels though. LOL

Those damn Romans had them everywhere they went. I think wimmin complain that men miss the toilet many times. How would they handle those narrow slits?

Stonework? It looks like concrete. Romans were
very good with concrete.
Making the whole thing out of concrete was the Roman wimin's way of insuring that the seat was always down.

It did not really matter as they used to leap up on top of that thing and squat.

At least they didn’t have a movable toilet seat to argue about.

I think I will have to elevate the discussion here after LJ and Nully have us in in the toilet. So let me give you guys a recipe I learned today.
At lunch I had Membrillo for dessert, but as you may not be able to purchase membrillo in your local markets, I am told that apples are just as delicious.
RECIPE
½ Kilo (1lb) Apples
1 Lemon
400 grms (1.75 - 2 cups) Sugar
Peel and remove the core from the apples.
Do the same with the lemon making sure all the white is removed too.
Cut into small pieces and put in a pot on a low heat.
Mash and add the sugar using an hand electric mixer.
In about 20 minutes the mixture will be ready just pour into a dish and put in the refrigerator.
The next day you will have a jello like dessert.

HISTORY
The Greeks knew a variety of common membrillero which they obtained in the city of Cydon, in Crete. In Greece the membrilleros were consecrated to Aphrodite. This fruit was the symbol of the love and fecundity, and those just married had to eat one before entering the nuptial room.
The membrillero is native of southern Europe and the countries to borders of the Caspian Sea (forests of the Caucasus, Persia and Armenia). Nowadays it grows in its natural form in the center and southwest of Asia (Armenian, Turkistán, Syria) it is also cultivated in Greece, Balkans and Argentina. In Spain there are plantations in Valencia, Murcia, Extremadura and Andalusia. |

So thats what that is! I've seen it a few times but never tried it. Are they tart or sweet?
I'm surprised that combining just those three ingredients will eventually produce something edible and or agreeable LOL :)

Wow. I remember seeing an old movie, on TCM possibly, about the
murder associated with this building. IIRC, it was titled the Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.

It is quite good and sweet of course with all that sugar and will keep forever, so they say.
I have seen the manufactured stuff but had no idea how it was made until today when Pili produced the home made variety which was delicious.
She gave me the recipe and told me that apples were just as good or even better as the membrillo fruit is much harder.
when it is done you give a slice about half an inch thick and about 4 inches long to each person and you will have plenty for left overs.
I am going to try and make it myself tomorrow - so will give you a commentary.

Yes, I would expect the finished dish to be sweet with all that sugar but I was curious as to whether or not the fruit membrillo is naturally sweet or tart.

I have never tasted one so I really do not know but I suppose it somewhat like an apple - although they can be sweet or tart depending upon the variety. She did say they were a little firmer than apples.
I suppose the young lovers had to have good teeth too. :)

I wonder if the finished dish is like jello, as you described it, or like a jam or jelly. Aren’t mebrillos approximately the size of lemons? I’m thinking they might be similar to a quince which is usually a little larger than a lemon, somewhat tart in flavor and the texture is fairly dence or had.
