joe torre is a class act. met him twice. could not have been nicer. and i'm not a yankee fan.

but seriously, my grandmother could have won those world seies in the mid-late-90's with those teams. i mean come on!

look at joe's record before he came to the yanks. he just wasn't that great of a manager. when he came to the yanks, he had the best pitching, hitting, and administrative support, that money could buy.

the real question is, who could you get to replace him? if your going to get mattingly, you might as well keep joe.

At least thru the winter. :-)

My Orioles have sucked for so long I kinda like wearing the other team hats anyhow. Another case of poor team ownership.

I’m a lifelong Red Sox fan and live right in the city of Boston. Always a lot of sports talk all year long around here. I have never heard a Sox fan say anything unkind about Torre. The man is well respected and many Sox fans love the guy.
Torre knows and respects the game of baseball like few players or managers out there. If the Yankees get rid of him he’ll be hired pretty darned fast by someone.
-
I remember seeing him walking down Newbury street one day while the Yanks were in town and most everyone walking by was saying “ Hi Joe! “. He had a big smile on his face, waved to people greeting him and said hello to anyone who acknowledged him.

I am a native New Yorker (state) but have lived on the West coast for many years....I don't really hate the Yankees, but I do hate Pay-rod....

Joe Torre?....just one of the best and I wish he would come and help my Mariners.....

of course, the Yankees I loved were a differant sort...Thurmun Munson, Bobby Murcer, Roy White....compare them to the strip bar champion Pay-rod....

Agreed.

March 6th, 1961 Bradenton, FLa: Joe Torre, left, and his older brother Frank, are shown at the Milwaukee Braves spring training.

Those flies are called “Canadian Soldiers.”

The official Canadian Soldiers are the mayfly. Those are these big suckers that have the long tails and the wings that stick up about an inch. They don't fly much or bite. They just land mostly on the north side of things and stay there. They get so thick in places by the lake they have to clean them up with shovels and snowplows.

I think the ones the other night were midges that look like big mosquitoes but don't suck blood or bite. I live near the lake and in the evening they get in huge swarms that look like dark clouds and you can hear a loud humming noise.

When Lake Erie was polluted a lot in the 60s and 70s, there were very few bugs around, but lately their numbers are way back up again.

He is a class act with a total horse's rear end for a boss.

I'm no fan of George Steinbrenner, but this statement is kinda out of line.

There's some question as to whom the "boss" of the Yankees is these days. Steinbrenner has rarely been seen or heard from in recent years until his comments were published the other day in a New Jersey newspaper (most previous quotes were attributed to mysterious statements released by a team spokesman), and there had been rumors a couple of years ago that he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

My prediction is that Torre stays -- if he wants to.

You are correct. It’s very strange. They just drop dead after a very short period of time. I stepped outside once, and there were so many of them on the ground dead, it kind of looked like sand, dirt or something.

Great analysis ... I especially like the Revenge of the Flies explanation.

But, consider also that the Yankees have not won a World Series without Chris Chambliss since Steinbrenner bought the club except for the 1976 Series where it was Chris' home run again the Royals that put them in the Series. They lost the 1976 Series to Cincinnati, but since that time, under Steinbrenner, the Yanks have only won the World Series when Chris was a part of the team:

Chambliss as a Yankee player
1976 - lost (but his home run put them in the Series)
1977 - won
1978 - won

Chambliss in Atlanta
1981 - lost

Chambliss as a Yankee coach
1996 - won
1998 - won
1999 - won
2000 - won

Chambliss fired after 2000 season
2001 - lost
2003 - lost

just another bit of nearly useless baseball trivia

I saw the last Indians and Browns games in that old stadium.

Sigh ... I had my first date with Mr. RightField in Municipal Stadium.

I’d like to see Chris as the Tribe manager but I can’t really bitch too much about Eric Wedge.

Too young to drink then, but I certainly remember it. I was at the infamous "bottle game" a couple years back at Cleveland Browns stadium.

That’s nothing... You want to talk about a curse?

The witch was born in Chicago in ‘47. Cubs’ last trip to World Series was in ‘45. Between her and the goat (how can we tell the difference?) - we’re screwed!
