(CBS) QUINCY, Mass. A soldier killed in Afghanistan last week told her family they should press for answers if anything happened to her, reports CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston.
Spc. Ciara Durkin, 30, of Quincy, Mass., was shot in the head last week outside a chapel near her office at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense reported Durkin was not killed in action.
Durkin's sister, Fiona Canavan, told the Patriot Ledger on Wednesday that when her sister was home three weeks ago, she told her about something she had come across that raised some concern with her.
"She was in the finance unit and she said, 'I discovered some things I don't like and I made some enemies because of it.' Then she said, in her lighthearted way, 'If anything happens to me, you guys make sure it gets investigated,''' Canavan told the paper.
According to the Ledger, Durkin was openly gay, but her family does not think her sexual orientation had anything to do with her death. Earlier newspaper reports indicated that the Durkin family said she may have been a target because she was gay.
Durkin's family told WBZ-TV on Tuesday that suicide is impossible. "She was at her proudest moment in her life, serving the U.S. Army, knowing two-thirds of her time in Afghanistan was over," said Canavan.
Circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, officials said. But, according to Durkin's family, the military is not being very forthcoming with information.
The Durkin family has now asked the Irish government to get involved. Ciara was born in Ireland before arriving in the Boston area when she was a child.
Durkin was assigned to Task Force Diamond as part of a finance unit deployed to Afghanistan last November.

Coming to a network crime drama series near you in the next few weeks.
It does sound like a plot from Fred Thompson’s old acting gig, doesn’t it?
A troubling story ... I wish she had told her sister more about the nature of the problem.
Because to newspaper editors everything is a hate crime. Why not consider that she was killed in Afghanistan because she was an American Christian?
Also, if she was in a finance group, she may have become aware of some corruption (not necessarily US).
The implication seems to be that she uncovered corruption.
I have a bad feeling about this.
You ‘n’ me both.
If not a feature film. This is a story that combines two of Hollywood’s favorite genres, the oppressed and victimized female martyr film (Silkwood, Boys Don’t Cry, Norma Rae, etc.etc.) and the evil American military film.
If you discover irregularities, it's best to wait until you're home for good before you take any real action.
But whose? Corruption on the part of the US Army? Or on the part of a US contracting firm? Or on the part of UN functionaries? Or on the part of some US ally? Or on the part of Afghanistani government functionaries?
Well, yeah. But without the financial angle, of course. It will be flagged as gay bashing. Just like Matthew Shepherd. Facts don't matter for the entertainment biz.
sorry, couldn't help it :)~
I disagree.
The plot will unravel like this.
She will be killed and it will be investigated as a hate crime. The investigators will find out that the murderer was part of an evil crew of gay-bashers in the military - but the homophobic triggerman will reveal that it was a contract killing he had been recruited for: a contract killing arranged by a corrupt US general who had been cooking the books and who took advantage of the killer's views to push him into murder.
Well, maybe not. Specialist Durkin was not a young, long-haired blond.
On the other hand, the story has murder, feminism, sex and a beret as components.
Ah, so many decisions Greta's producers have to make.....to go with it or not.
BTW, Greta looked tired and worn-out last night. This last crucial trip to the sandy shores of Aruba must have been too much.
Leni
I wonder that too. Lesbian or not, she was a U.S. Soldier who was shot in the head, who also gave family members warning that she might be in danger.
The press may try to play up the gay angle, but that does not mean that it couldn’t have been part of the reason for her killing; just as it might not have been a consideration at all. But her death does need to be investigated.
“What did you know and when did you know it?”
You left out that the corrupt US General was trying to cover up his opiate distribution and bribing business. Also every PFC that is in on the General’s business have to be stupid knuckledraggers because they were not smart enough to do anything else, but join the Army. Of course Pauli Shore will be the Sgt. that miraculously uncovers the nefarious plot.
